I need a couple of names...

I'm watching the classifieds/gunshots for a small, inexpensive, .22 revolver. Something one would likely find off paper/private sale. Something J - frame/pocketable sized to load with snakeshot & heavy, subsonic ammo to use on the irrigation ditch.

I'm currently carrying my SP101 but it's WAY more gun than I need for snakes & burrowing critters - especially with cattle in the vicinity.

I'd like some opinions on what I should be looking for.

but they made a 2 1/2" and a 4" also.
The Taurus j frame current ones are not bad.
Rossi also made a small frame revolver.

Lately have seen some H&R 999s turn up pretty cheap.
Cool factor very high and the 4" is very nice to carry.

Take a look at the Taurus Ultra Light snubby. 9 shot adjustable sight copy of the S&W J frame. Also comes in all steel for a few bucks less. I've got the stainless lightweight version and like it a lot. Very accurate and a lot of gun for the money.

OI I think most any of the H&R or Iver Johnson .22 pistols would be fine for you and most of them were 8 or nine rounds.

Why fool with .10 cent junky top breaks which will cost you a c-note or more that about as accurate as a Italian Carcano or similar foreign junk? And you better be 2 feet away if you want to hit a snake's head with a 2" snubby. I've seen plenty of well used Ruger Single Six's or Ruger auto's for a deuce ($200) or less. A 4 and 5/8th's would be perfect. They work eveytime and put the lead where you want it.......easily.---------------------Sixgun

You could always use shot cartridges.

A Ruger Mark-I or II that was cheap because it sat under a car seat and got dinged or rusted just a bit would be a pretty good solution!

The "cheap" aspect is understood... Several of the guns mentioned are really nice... but mot exactly guns I would want to drop into a 2-state irrigation ditch running many thousand CFS.

I'm planning to carry a pair of shot loads and the rest 60gr subsonics.

Accuracy beyond 20ft is a non issue. If I need more than that I can go get the rifle. This is for OhBugger! Snake encounters and gophers of opportunity.

What about the new Ruger polymer-framed .22 DA? Might not be the cheapest, but may be tbe best for what you are looking for OI.

If inexpensive is what you want, you might look at the Heritage 22 single actions. Back in the late '80s I bought my son an FIE Little Ranger. It is a 3.5" round butt, 6 shot ,22LR single action with wood grips. We kept it loaded with 22 shot most of the time. It took several pidgeons, snakes and mice out in our barns. He still has it. The finish is worn (black paint?), but it is still tight, and it has been shot ALOT.

It looks just like the new "Heritage" brand 22 single actions, even has the hammer block safety on the left side of the frame. I still see them at gunshows occasionally for around $100.

It is not the Ruby we are familiar with,as it is smaller than even a J frame.
Someday I will put it al together.

The High-Standard Sentinel can often be found at a reasonable price.
It was a well made nine shot, swing-out cylinder, double action.
It can be found in any number of barrel lengths and grip shapes, including plow-handle and birds-head.
From what I have read, it was designed by the man who later designed the Security Six.

This is what I was talking about, except mine had only 22LR cylinder. I am pretty sure that these can be had for around $200 new and somewhere between $100 - $150 used, especially with one cylinder. This $225 was NIB at a gun show this past weekend; he was willing to negotiate, but I didn't push it since I wasn't going to buy it.

FWIW, I just found a Hawes "Deputy Marshall" for FRN 90 which will work for now. After a thourough cleaning (which it looks to have never had) it words fine and puts Federal Shot loads right where I point it.

Not as small as I'd like, but workable.

The Hawes is larger but if it's not a problem to carry it, I think that it is better quality than either the older FIE or the new Heritage version. The FIE/Heritage 3 1/2" seems to be about the size of a Ruger Bearcat but not as sleek, nor is the action nearly as smooth. That being said our FIE is fairly accurate and has lasted for going on 24 years and several thousand rounds of 22LR, shorts and at least a few hundred rounds of 22 Shot (Federal).

I'm glad this popped back up as I'd missed it and was going to post a similar topic.

There's been a couple times I've been hunting where I've wished I'd had a .22 along.

I was recently given my grandfather's S&W model 61 but it's perfectly new condition in the original box that I really don't want to take the chance of losing or damaging it.

Soooo. I've been thinking I'd like to get that nifty new Ruger LCR .22 or the stainless
Bearcat. Or maybe the short barreled Charter Arms.

I think I would get more use out of the LCR but the Bearcat is just plain cool.

Anyone shooting the LCR yet ?

I can't believe someone in this bunch hasn't mentioned what McIver would do
One show he found a solid steel rod, reamed it out, and inserted the barrel into a piece of 2 x4. He used some clay to hold a an 8 penny nail on top of the primer. When the BG came in, MCIver whacked that nail on a handy post, striking the primer, which fired the the .22 which hit the BG

Only problem is BATF if no tax stamp and no serial # on the receiver, whatever that would be!!
