Forget mil-spec, it's no good anymore...
At the show yesterday my buddy and I saw a nondescript AR on a vendor's table. I wasn't about to give it a second look until I saw this in red letters on the price tag:
DOUBLE MIL-SPEC
Double mil-spec? Ummmmm, Ok....
My buddy is the AR guy and I just pointed to it. He looked at the tag, looked at me and said "Uhhhh...".
The salesman came over and we asked about double mil-spec. We got a song and dance about how it's even better than mil-spec, better finished than other budget friendly ARs, ran smoother, blahblahblah.
When he was done we nodded our heads, gave a non-committal "uh-huh" and hurried off before laughing in his face.
So remember kids, when your AR absolutely, positively has to work regardless of rain, sleet, snow or radiation accept nothing less than DOUBLE mil-spec....

Nothing so needs reforming as other people's habits.

Wouldn't "double Mil-Spec" indicate that all tolerances were twice as large? I'd think you'd want "½ Mil-Spec"!!!

Of course, there is a reason for mil-spec tolerances.
A Target Grade PTR91 (HK91 clone) is VERY ammo sensitive.
The "GI" model (mil-spec) is not.
The target grade is sub MOA
The GI will still hit a 12" gong at 300m from the knee with irons every time I pull the trigger... with nasty milsurp ammo.
I like "mil spec" just fine.

I remember in 1995 a fellow trying to sell me a pre-ban Contender....

Lord help me, I feel old...
Remember thirty or so years ago when military was top of the line and everyone wanted it? Boots, weapons, webbing, commo gear, etc.
I can't think of anything military related I dealt with (at least up to 2006) where there wasn't a commercial equivalent that was better. And units even have a commercial credit card where they can buy some things off-the-shelf on the commercial market (after appropriate approvals, of course) that's better than anything they are issued.
Something my younger brother said couple decades back pointed out the trend to me. "Have you noticed," he said, "that hiking boots are looking more and more like military gear and military boots are looking more and more like commercial hiking boots?"

Re: Forget mil-spec, it's no good anymore...
I used to make stuff that was mil-spec, or it at least it was supposed to be. Don't be too impressed by the term. Even if it's doubled.
Don't mean it's good, don't mean it's bad, just means it's supposed to be what they asked for.
Remember if you ever got issued something in the service that was a piece of crapolla… that too was mil-spec. Double mil-spec could be twice as crappy.

Slow is just slow.
Re: Forget mil-spec, it's no good anymore...
twice as large means that it not as tight so that means it will function all of the time...might rattle some...but... :)Griff wrote:Wouldn't "double Mil-Spec" indicate that all tolerances were twice as large? I'd think you'd want "½ Mil-Spec"!!! :P :P

Now THAT was laugh-out-loud funny!
I have seen and heard similar thing.
I had a dealer, who was trying to talk down my gun, tell me that Ruger didn't make an old-style Vaquero. I had to explain to him that I never said three-screw.
I went elsewhere, refusing to wrassle with a pig.

Like a double hernia or double bypass surgery? Twice as good as the original.

One thing I noticed about mil-spec stuff (this was about 40 years ago though) is that it is all made by THE LOWEST BIDDER.

The MREs we used to eat were Mil Spec, and they tasted like cardboard. Double Mil Spec, good one. I wonder if the seller got any suckers to bite?

I lived in Kalifornia at the time and it was the truth not a funny joke. Don't know if you can still get Contenders in the Fourth Reich any more.Hobie wrote:I remember in 1995 a fellow trying to sell me a pre-ban Contender....
