25-20 and 25-35 with speer 75grn hot-cor

Post by chadbr »

I purchased some of these SPFN/CANN .257 speer hot-for bullets to shoot in an old Winchester 25-20... I also have an old 25-35 I posted about ages ago. I haven't shot either one yet!

http://www.speer-bullets.com/ballistics ... aspx?id=23

Anyhow, I'd like to hear anyone's experience with these rifle / bullet combos.

I'd also like to hear about appropriate size game / ranges used if possible. I'll be in S. Texas shooting these... Rabbits, snakes, Javelina, hogs, and of course deer.

Thanks, Chad

IIRC that bullet was designed for 25-20 so check the 35 don't turn them into a varmint bullet!

Best wishes.

Yea, me too! I can tell you the Remington 86 gr. sp is a tack driver in '92's and Marlins with a dose of 2400.-------Sixgun

I have shot them in my 25-35 but unfortunately not to the point where I can tell you much. They do not seem to cycle well in my 94 so over all length is an issue, they hit the upper lip of the chamber.Seems to group okay at 50 yards with 54 year old eyes but my rifle needs work as the groups tend to be vertical ( got rid of the Bubba forearm so that may have changed) .Think (CRS ) I was use 25.5 grains of 3031 which seem to just give a hint of recoil, flat primers but not cratered and clean necks so it is sealing the case when fired.Have yet to work my way to 100 yards or load enough to to be really convinced that I've got it all figured out.

Never had a 25-35 but I did have a nice old Marlin 1893 in 25-36 Marlin which is for all intents and purposes the same thing .

In the one I had I shot mostly the Lyman 257312 and the Lyman 257325 . I did however shot enough of the Hornady 117 grain RN to have a good nuff for deer load . Although if I'd ever hunted with it I'm sure I would have used the Lyman 257325 bullet which was about 115 grains and gas checked .

I use the speer 75gr. in a 25-35 with a good doze of LVR
shoots bout 2 in at 100yd & thats as good as i can shoot with any gun with out a scope, went to the gravel pit awhile back, theres all sorts of targets all the way out to maybe 300yds, they done a good job & I
was impressed at the zip the little buggers had, would i shoot a deer with em? if i had to im sure it would work, but id try the soggy paper test first, my 25-35 will cycle them good if i lever it like i mean it

pretty tough bullet....the nose expands but the base etc holds together real well.....so can be used over a wider range of velocities with good results. my favorite jacketed bullet for the 25/20, haven't tried it in my 25/35s but i will.

What "dose" of 2400 powder do you get the good accuracy with in your Model 92, Sixgun? 86 grain jacketed bullets are what i plan to reload with in my Model 92.

Ollogger, what is LVR?I'm thinking that if I seat my bullets deeper so none of the crimping groove shows I'd have better luck.Do you have an over all length that you load to?

model 55 LVR is Hodgon powder its full name is, LEVERevolution
bought a can for 30-30 but havent used it there yet
Hodgon Annual Manual has one load in 25-35 with 75 gr. speer
30 gr. to start at 2707 fps.
34c max. at 2992 fps. with 24 in. bbl.
i just crimp in the grove & works for me, i was shooting today & working it easy cus i didnt want the brass in the sand & had no problems with it working, was looking for PDs but they was to spooky for shooting with tang sight, i left my scoped 223 at home

9 grains. 11.5 grains of RL-7 shoots just as good and is not as postion sensitive.------Sixgun
