Derailed by a Savage 99

Well, I was planning on my next purchase being a lot of things... A S&W Police .357. Maybe the .30-06 bolt action. Not immediately either, since I have all but used up my firearms goodwill for the year with my wife, but then I stumbled across somebody short selling a Savage 99 in .308, rotary mag + Tasco x50 scope and some rounds for $400. I'm tentatively counter offering $450 just to get a leg up on the other offers... The finish isn't much to look at, but what say you?

That is an E model.. an economey model, but it does have a couple of advantages.. first the safety on the lever behind the trigger will allow you to de-cock without dry fireing... something you CAN NOT do with the tang safety models.. there is no window and magazine round counter in the left side of the receiver... not a big problem.. you'll never loose the clip... rotary magazine..stock is hardwood, prolly birch.. price is about right for that model... just my opinion.. Les

My first Lever was a borrowed 99E. Decent price too. If you think that throwing in the extra $50 bribe will help in future transactions, go for it and consider it a "deposit".

Yeah, the guy indicates he received a handful of lowball offers and I figured the extra $50 (now $40 since its easier to pull from an ATM) would give him incentive to consider me over other potentially more convenient offers. Besides, with the scope, sling and a handful of rounds, it's really pretty decent even at $450. I'll post the results here

that 99 looks just like my 243... I have hunted with that rifle for many years and is very accurate. Love that thing, lost count on how many deer that has shot in the last 30 years.
Dad hunted with a 99C in 308 and he shot a bunch too... And could unload his faster.

Alright, just got back. She's an older soldier, reportedly serving the sellers father as well as seller himself; serving to bring down his first buck. Almost makes me a tad sad to break that line of ownership, but here we are. Doesn't look bad on the surface. Wood actually has more character than the bleached out picture from before, but there are condition issues as you'll note.

Les was correct: A 99e, Series A. If that's the serial on the reciever I'm seeing, it's in the 800k range starting with a 'B'. Will have to research that more. The Scope is a Tasco 3-9x50 World Class; not top of the line and has a few nicks itself, but works through the focal range clearly enough.

Honest wear, some rust, bluing worn down in some areas. A few scratches and nicks, but given how the rifle has been passed down, I'm not surprised. It's a working rifle, nothing more, nothing less. It'll need some TLC... Anybody have the best method for some cleaning? In any case, I think $440 isn't too bad of a deal... you know.. Assuming it fires The action surprised me a bit, tightening up as you returned the lever back to battery. Will be interesting getting to know the blondie

Pressed checkering introduced in 1966 until Monte Carlo stock in 1981.

Your recoil pad and barrel mount sling ring is aftermarket.

Between 1949 and 1972 all 99s have a small stamp on the front of the lever boss just above the link pin. It will be a small circle or oval with one or two numbers and a letter. The letter corresponds to the date of manufacture. An "A" code is 1949. A "V" code (like mine) is 1968. A "Z" is 1972. "O" and "Q" were not used because of possible confusion/punch wear.

Stock seems to have some wiggle against the reciever. Will have to find a way to tighten that.

See the bit that comes down from the receiver that holds the lever pivot screw (link pin)? That's the Lever Boss.

On the Front of that (i.e. muzzle end) there should be the stamping.

Where is the SN stamped? and what does the barrel roll say?

Oh! New information!

Took the furniture off for a basic cleaning and a shot of CLP and found some markings toward the end of the tang framework. The left side is stamped YG15. The right side looks like a J. And I got the scope out of the way and it also reads Savage 99e with a Y stamped below it.

Mean anything to anybody?

It feels tighter as you close the lever because Savage 99's cock on closing.

It looks like the original stock finish was removed (not everywhere), resulting in the lighter/blonde look - they originally had a walnut-colored wash/finish, IIRC.

If it was mine, I would remove the wood from the gun, degrease & cold blue the metal - then wipe off any sort of finish from the wood with Formby's Furniture Refinisher (Home Cheapo, Ace Hardware, etc), following can directions.

Once the wood's been stripped, I'd then stain it & put on a nice TruOil finish, B 4 taking it hunting.
