Celebrating the Fourth of July

Post by AJMD429 »

In addition to the juvenile-but-fun purchase of some Tannerite at the local gun shop (you've GOT to try that stuff... 8) ), I've been reading two books appropriate for the occasion (links embedded).

Valley Forge, and To Try Mens Souls

Both are great books, reminding us of the REAL meaning of freedom...
Doctors for Sensible Gun Laws
"first do no harm" - gun control LAWS lead to far more deaths than 'easy access' ever could.

We will probably still be under a Fire Ban, so no Tannerite here.

Ever since I saw them in Boy's Life 45 years ago or so, I've wanted a Carbide Cannon 8) 8) I wonder if a potato gun without the potato would work?

I bought Jr. a carbide cannon one year for turning in a good report card. I think he was in about the 5th grade. We have all kinds of grown up little boys in our family.

We used to make our own carbide cannons with a syrup can. The kind with a friction fit lid.
Punch a pin-hole near the bottom. Put in a few drops of water and a pebble of calcium carbide. Put the lid on, (not too tight). Hold your finger over the pin-hole until you feel pressure build up. Ignite! Don' get in the way of the lid!

It's certainly not so now, but years ago the Fourth of July was not celebrated much in Mississippi, for that is the day that Gen. Pemberton surrendered the City of Vicksburg to the Federal army under Gen. Grant. Maybe that's why in my early years in north Mississippi we shot fireworks at Christmas rather than on Independence Day. Nowadays there are lots of fireworks shot on Independence Day where I live in south Mississippi.

I drove the neighbors nuts with my carbide cannon. Nothing like the smell of acetylene in the morning . :D

After breakfast we will read the entire Declaration of Independence. If the kids are still alive after this, we will go to the river and unload on some targets with the .22s and .22mags. No fireworks this year - too dry. Swimming, fishing, guns, BBQ, and cold beer for the over 21.
Thomas Jefferson is a popular topic at our house as my hot wife is both a sixth and seventh generational descendent (grandpa). He is one of my personal heroes.

A couple upriver from us have a son (about 50 yrs old) who drives truck and the 4th is his favorite holiday. He buy several huge boxes of fireworks (probably amounting to a couple of thousand bucks at least) and a big potluck is held in conjunction with shooting them off with all the neighbors bringing along a favorite dish to share. A real old-fashioned observance, though it really doesn't do much toward recognizing the "real reason" behind the holiday.

I have always been interested in Jefferson's descendants.
Could you post some pictures of your hot wife? :-)

80gr BP well packed under a non-combustible wad.

Twice.

Big boom(s), no afterburn.

And it can't be called "fireworks" either.

OI,
