Road Trip Across Mozambique

Post by JimT »

The wife and I just returned from a road trip from the eastern-most side of Mozambique to the western. We went with another couple in two vehicles. The roads range from GOOD to BAD to UGLY .. and then get worse.

We went through some of the wildest parts of Mozambique - unchanged in hundreds of years except for a dirt track running through and vehicles now and then.

We covered over 1800 kilometers .. much of it in second or third gear at less than 30 kph. On the dirt roads we never got into fifth gear, rarely into fourth. One 6 hour stretch was second and third gear with times in first.

On the really bad parts of the road I broke two tires. The Lord was with us and both times we were where I could get replacement tires. The really bad stretch was from Lichinga to Maponda .. about 60 kilometers .. took us about two and a half hours to cover it, some in 4WD.

I have photos posted .. you can access them here:

Looks like quite an adventure, at least you didn't have to worry about picking up a speeding ticket.

After that adventure, pavement travel may seem rather bland. Your destination there looks beautiful!!!

Looks like fun, a little hair raising in places though that bridge looks a little weak.
