Any hat that fits, take steam kettle or coffee/tea pot and water & heat shape till you're satisfied, add dirt to taste.

If you like that hat style, you can sometimes find an old tall crowned Resistol on ebay with that exact crown, and even if you don't just find an old tall crowned Resistol and shape it yourself with some steam or take it to a western store have them shape it, for only a few bucks. I have purchased several of them old Resistols and Stetsons on ebay for as little as 20 to 40$ and they would cost new nowdays at least 150 or better. I even found a real gold nugget one day, on there, it was a Resistol Black Gold, like new for 40 dollars and those normally go for $300 to $400 at the western store. It's my Favorite hat, after a little reshaping of the low crown to fit my head.

Hats used to be sold unshaped, looking like the Indians wore them, flat brimmed and high round crowned, and they were shaped after buying them according to the local custom and users taste.

I've never used a hat as it was sold, I shape them how I like them. As was mentioned, hat stores generally have a steamer to shape them, or you can use a tea kettle or humidifier. Wearing them in the rain then shaping works ok too. Roy Rodgers did a video of shaping one in the shower. Buying one that fits properly is more important than the style.

Buying a good beaver fur hat is a big improvement over rabbit fur or wool felt hats. The good quality beaver fur holds its shape better and generally lasts longer in hard use. The number of "X's" used to be a rough guide in the percentage of beaver fur, but today, all companies use whatever number they want. A cheap hat really is a cheap hat in general. Finding good deals on quality hats is time and money well spent. One lady I know with an antique store buys hats at yard sales and resells them at her store, still a good deal compared to buying new retail.

as a dis-placed NY-er i never grew up with cowboy hats, but i always liked the NYPD 8-Point style hat the best...but if you're paranoid there's always tin-foil...keeps the CIA or Homeland Security from scanning you're brain... :)
