anyone here want to load 38-40 hunting loads for $$

Post by rjohns94 »

it seems I am now the proud owner of an original 1892 in 38wcf. I am very pleased with its condition, feel and configuration. Checked my local dealer and he didn't have hunting loads for it. So I ordered a box from Midway and it should be here next week. What I was wondering is, is there someone on this forum who would like to load some hunting loads, comparable to the winchester super x loadings, (180gr, 1150fps, 550ft-lps) perhaps two boxes of lead flat nose bullets. If so, drop me a line and let me know the price and when you could get them to me. Or if you have any winchester super x loads laying about that you want to sell, let me know. thanks Hunting season is monday after Thanksgiving so I would need them pretty quick. Thanks

You could try Scroggin's Gun Shop 765-342-4941 - I think he reloads lots of the hyphenated-calibers. I've bought .32-20 and .45 Colt loads there and they were plenty fine. Anyway - he might ship them for not too much...!

I received a flyer from Natchez Shooters Supplies last week and they had the Winchester factory loads on sale. I can reload some for you but the biggest problem with loading them hotter than the factory load is head separation. I have some loads with 180 JHP .40 S&W bullets that I applied a cannelure to. They were 1575 fps out of my 1892 rifle. The Winchester brass is not as strong as Starline and separates on the second firing. PM me if I can help you with reloading.

I believe that's what Rhimfire loads for his '92 in 38-40.

Mike, you're more than welcome to use some of my BP 38-40's
These are about as close to the original 38WCF load as
you can get

Mike last time I was at Cabelas in PA I thought they had a box or two of Winchesters. Have you called them?

No. Haven't called them. I will go by them tomorrow. Thanks. I have one box on the way and I have a couple boxes of cowboy loads for plinking. I might have to order me some bullets and dies.

Thanks Mike. I thought I would load some up once I got settled into this. Did you chronology those out of your 73?

I personally didn't Chronograph these.
I was told these are loaded to very closely replicate the
original black powder 38-40 round. These are what I
intend to use in the 73 when I get it back from Redman's.

what are you hunting? I certainly wouldn't use those anemic 977fps loads for deer, maybe rabbits. Those are Colt SAA velocities. In a 92 winchester you can easily and safely shoot 1500fps + in a rifle in good condition.

Deer. The Winchester loads seem enough within the limits

Be careful guys, I believe you will need a license to load ammunition for sale.

You do need a license to produce ammunition for sale. Check out the ATF web site. Given the current administration and their obvious re-prioritization of gun control, I would not participate in such activities without the proper licensing, insurance, etc.

Hobie
