2 years wait, 50-2 1/2 Shiloh Sharps

Post by rafter-7 »

I sent my own wood in and had my initials on hammer side in gold and my brand on left side. The rifle is true and of the period in every way to shoot paper patch with Orville Loomer's reamer, which was original to the Sharps rifle at the time.

Uh... you're brand on the left side there? Looks a lot like an N bar instead of a rafter 7. What happened? Did the engraver make a big boo boo?

Mighty nice lookin' rifle, though.

There is something special about a Shiloh, and you have made sure yours is even more special! That is a mighty fine rifle you have, and the wood, well, all I can say is "My, O, My!"! And the caliber, yes, that will leave a mark!

Now for your laugh of the day... When I ordered my own special Shiloh Sharps over twenty years ago, a Montana Roughrider in .45-100 caliber, it took two years and eight days to arrive. Two years and eight days! You would think that would be enough. But as a California resident I had to wait an additional ten days for a background check just to receive a rifle for which there is no over-the-counter ammunition available!

Now don't you boys go turning this fine thread all political. It's all about the fine Shiloh Sharps, and California politics is just the joke it is...

Now as an aside, I find that as an older man I need a lot less "boot" in the caliber of my Shiloh. I just today bought a .45-70 barrel off Gunbroker, and my .45-100 will soon seem like a brand new rifle to me.

I would have enjoyed one in .50 caliber in my younger days. I hope you enjoy yours! :D

I am a wooss when it comes to recoil. I shot my friends 50 configured just like this one and with the military style stock 1 in 36 twist to shoot 470 grain PP bullets. I would compare it to a 25-06 shootin 117 grains. His rifle impressed me so much i had to have one of my own. A 3 inch gong at 100 yd iron sights was not a challenge it got hit every time

Welcome to the Shiloh Club Rafter! Mighty pretty example there. You certainly had a gorgeous hunk of wood, and they turned it into a beautiful stock and forend! They do nothing but grow in value! I know I appreciate mine more now, than when it was new! :P

Great piece. Now go out and shoot something with it!!

It's sad that the young people of today are tied to instant gratification because they'll never experience the deep satisfaction and thrill of finally getting something you've had to wait and hope for for a long time. It's infinitely more satisfying when you've dreamed and waited for something than when you think it, get it, and then are tired of it all in the same day.

Man that's purty! My dream for way too many years and I figure I probably never will have one. Then I see something like this and start thinking all over again. I have things setting around I haven't shot for years. Might be time to thin the herd and use that money to buy my dream.

I have often dreamed of getting a Shiloh Sharps. The quality is well worth waiting for.
