9mm rimfire shotgun still taking game

My brother sent me this picture of a red squirrel he shot in his 100+ year old attic with a 100 (?) year old Winchester 9mm rimfire shotgun. Just thought I'd share and was wondering if anyone here has one or remembers a 9mm rimfire shotgun?

I guess the first question I have is where the heck did he get ammo for it?

Bridger, Fiocchi still makes 9mm rimfire shotgun shells. I know Midway carries them and probably a few others do as well. My brother has some original ones and if I remember correctly the ones he has were a paper hull (or cardboard) with copper base. I'm sure he shot the red squirrel with the modern ones though and they are all brass at least the ones I've seen.

I have one original round for it. Some Guy told me ammo couldn't be forund for it, I had to prove him wrong.

thanks for sharing...never heard of a 9mm rimfire shotgun before...education is a wonderful thing...ever notice that many classic firearms have the "NUMBER 36" attached to it...again thank you... :)

The 9mm shotgun is alive and well in the UK, sometimes called the Garden Gun and even the No 3 Bore.
Ammo is expensive for what it is but can be found in most good gun shops over here.
I used one around my Pheasant rearing pens on Rats and Squirrels.
The old paper and brass shells would eject from most guns because only the brass remained in the chamber after the gun was fired, the paper went went with the shot.
Webley & Scott made a bolt action single shot that can be found for about £50 to £100. correction, £125 to £195..
A lot of the old Belgian ones had 23 inch barrels thus making them illegal as shotguns in the UK.

Kind of a rare gun and cartridge. I have read about them over the years from time to time, I remember some called it a "garden gun". Sure dident know folks were still using 'em.

As leverluver said I think it's only by way of the hardcopy, they don't have much of an online presence.
Although any rimfire round COULD be reloaded I got the impression that it was a lot of trouble and would only be used for things that didn't have current loadings like .25 or .32 rimfire even though all things are possible.

What is the minimum barrel length for a shotgun in the UK? I know a number of people who use shotguns here in the US that are shorter. I believe my H&R 12 guage has a 22 inch barrel and I have taken deer, ducks and turkey with it.

Minimum barrel length for shotguns in the UK is 24" and they must be restricted to 3 shots with no detachable magazines, if the shotgun is not to these specs. it becomes in law a Firearm and then requires a different licence..
