Levergun case.
Bought this box a couple weeks ago at a local gun show. It's an old rifle case that had no interior, or dividers, but it was $15, so I took it home.
Here's the results of a couple night's work to fit dividers and cover with red felt. It was a fun project to make up a cased set of the old 1881 Marlin, plus a 1881 Marlin loading tool, Dupont FFG powder can, old Brite Bore cleaning kit, and original .40-60 cartridges.

This is my second fitted case. I built one from scratch for my 1893 Marlin deluxe takedown two barrel set. It's a lot easier to build with a solid box to start with!
The time consuming part is fitting the felt to the inside! Took about 6 hours of careful cutting and gluing to cover it all. I started by situating all the items inside, then tracing each. Then I cut strips of wood 1" high, and 1/2" wide. Glued them all in place with Gorilla Glue, and let it dry over night. Cover the divider sides first, then the divider bottoms, and finally the lid.

I thought about covering it, but I lik the old original looking patina on the outside, so I'll leave it as is. I may add the Marlin Logo inside the lid, as I made for case #1 long ago.Chuck 100 yd wrote:Very nice job. How about covering the outside in leather?
This is case #1 which I've posted previously:

I use Elmer's Glue All for laying down the felt. I put it in a pan, and use a paint brush to get it evenly applied mto all the nooks. A small paint brush for the tight areas like the inletting around the hooked swiss buttplate.Modoc ED wrote:Very nice work on both cases. What kind of glue did you use for laying down the felt?
I use a small roller to press it down into the glue. For the large areas I glue one half and roll it down, then fold the other half back and glue it down. Otherwise the Elmers dries before I can get it all secured.
Thanks guys!

Hey, I told him what it was worth, and at the end of the show he came back and offered it to me for half of what I told him to sell it for. Couldn't let it go at that price!jdad wrote:I saw the twinkle in your eye when he brought it by for your opinion........
It came out real nice!
