Another bad day at the range

Post by FatJackDurham »

I tried to go out and shoot my 45-70 loads this morning, but wind and rain started up and I had to abort. Bad luck.

If ya live in the country and have a garage you can set up a backstop and shoot out a garage window.
That`s what i did for winter shooting, only a 50 yard range though.

Better than a good day at work?

One guy on the forum told about how he got up early to hunt, slid out of bed so as not to disturb his wife, and went out to his hunting spot. There was some rain, but he thought he could tough it out. On the way it began sleeting, so he decided to abort.

He arrived home and crept into the house, got undressed, and slipped back under the covers behind his wife. She was starting to stir so he kissed her neck and put his arms around her, and murmured, "The weather outside is terrible".

And she sleepily said, "yes, and can you believe my husband is out hunting in that stuff?"

A patient of mine built an insulated pole-barn with a room on the end that had a bench across about 20 feet of wall, and the wall opens up so you can shoot out to 1,000 yards. Of course he's a 50 BMG fan. Never been to his 'range', but it sounds cool.

Another dude around these parts has a house in the woods and there is a valley off to one side, so he built a balcony off his livingroom that juts out over the creek-bed, and cleared enough understory to have a 100-yard woods-range (and deer-hunting stand). He mostly shoots steel since going to fetch/place targets is a major hike through the house and down stairs into the creek and up the valley.

I went out to the range this morning. It was chilly, 24, but the wind was dead calm. I'm with you though, if the wind is howling I'm staying home.

It was 0 F with the windchill it seamed colder. I went to a indoor range with three pistols and two 10/22's. My brother and I had a wonderful afternoon. I tried a grizzly 12 Ga with an 8 inch barrel. It was not as bad recoil wise as I had imagined. Muzzle blast was brutal standing next to it though :D

Anything below 65ºF is uncomfortable. Anything below 55ºF is unreasonable. Below 45ºF ain't target weather... it's HUNTING TIME!

Yep, it was blowing sidways. My home weather station recorded 30 mph gusts. We had snow rollers here, which is when the wind blows the snow up into bales.

No day at the range is a bad day.

On Sat., my bud Gunny and I show up at 8 am. It was cold and windy. We left our junk in the Jeep and walked in the clubhouse to bs, then over to the silhouette garage and bs ed with the boys organizing steel targets. By then (3 hours later) the wind calmed down and the sun came out, as did the AR's, Uzi, single actions, and a few 1886's. :D --------6
