My first original Win 86

Post by Marvin S »

Just got him today from a gentleman over on the Winchester collectors forum. Good tight solid gun with a perfect bore. Its a 33 WCF now to tool up to load for it $$$$$. Looks like the new RCBS 33-200 mold is a plain base now. There are a couple molds over at Accurate molds that I'm eyeballing for it. :D

That's a beauty. If she shoots half as good as she looks you're a lucky man.

Looks just like mine.

Smoothest Winchester I've ever had.
Deadly accurate too! Knocked a 180 lb Boar flat with one shot.

Nice gun.

A word of warning, don't wear the finish off the rifle from excessive fondling! It is easy to do, cause every time you think about it, you will have to go back to the gun safe to make sure it is still there and while you are at it, you will have to throw it up to your shoulder again.....and again...... and again.

Let the fun times roll! :D

Sounds like you crossed one of life's milestones (at least for a levergunner). I only have one 'original' of anything pre-1900, and it does have a different mystique.

Someday I do want to get an 1886, and I'd settle for a modern-era copy, as long as it doesn't have a rebounding hammer.

But the 'real' ones have 'been there' and 'done that', and thus have mystical powers our newbie-copies won't earn until maybe the year 2100 or so...

Congratulations! There is something about those old, original '86s that make the rifle feel awfully good in a fellow's hands.

Sort of like mine, my favourite Winchester after my '73. Pains me to put it up for sale, as I know I will never be able to afford another..... :(

Know what you mean brother. Mine was made in 1916 and is in 45-90. Full octagon and full magazine. I guess yours' is an extra light weight? I really like the configuration for a hunting rifle.

Very nice rifle. There is just something about the sound and feel of an 86 or 71 action that is very special. The hook swivels are a nice touch also!

Actually the .33WCF rifle in that configuration was not referred to as either a LW or ELW, only the .45-70's were. In my old catalogues the .33WCF calibre with shotgun butt and half mag was the ".33WCF Smokeless Rifle"

Great looking rifle. I have just found an 1886 here in Australia and am waiting for paperwork etc before I get it into my sticky hands. Must admit that mine is a bit "rougher looking" than yous.
Now you are expected to post arange report are you not?

You can find jacketed flat points here but they're getting expensive.

Nice rifle. They do carry well.

It might be a little while till the shootin commence's. But I'll get er done when I round up the components and such. I would like to find a original tang sight that aint 250 bucks. I have the old Hornady manual that has loads for the 200 gr jacket bullet but was warned that the data was a little warm.
