New (to me) Killer 12 Gage BP pop gun!

Post by 2ndovc »

One of those guns that when I saw it I knew I had to have it.

Looks like a British Saddle Carbine from the mid 1800s.
It's a 12 gage cyl. bore SRC made in India. Doesn't
look like it's ever been fired. I have no idea how old it really is but I thought it was really cool.

I ordered some fiber wads and over shot cards this afternoon.
However I have no idea where to start with powder and shot charges. Reading all kinds of different things.
Most of my shooting will be with .375 RB/ buckshot loads.

I have had my eye peeled for something like that. Looks like an awesome dual purpose carbine/shotgun.

Enjoy

Your smoothbore sure looks like a repro .65 cal smoothbore 1856/61 Tower Calvary carbine/musketoon w/25" bbl - made by Rajasthan Armoury.

( In-jya: jatwadi Udaipur , Rajasthan  ).

Other than the size of the bore I'd say that's pretty darned close.

I went out this morning to one of the larger shops hoping to find some
musket caps and FFG. Fortunately the BP stuff hasn't been over run like everything else.
Got two tins of caps and a pound of Pyrodex RS. I had a pound or two of FFG and about 150 musket caps
but didn't think it would hurt to stock up a bit.

The line at the gun counter was about two to three people deep. Inventory was better than I expected but
they've jacked up the prices on the ARs and M1A's. Ammo was there but limited to two boxes of 9mm. Pallets of .40 S&W though.

Make a measure that hold your chosen shot load, use the same measure for your powder. That is a standard max load powder wise. Best patterns are usually found with less powder.
Say 3/4 to 7/8 volume of your shot measure.

Sometimes better patterns are gained without the wad and just a few OS cards instead.
If it don't like going off, make sure the nipple is no less than .040".
