Just a fun(ny) video of our new baby...

Post by AJMD429 »

...goat.

I posted this on my "Minimalist Battery" thread (goat-turds might make good shotgun pellets if you dried them thoroughly), but thought it was 'cute' enough to share elsewhere.

We had three born prematurely and only one lived, and we've been taking turns keeping it warm and bottle-feeding it (mom won't accept her), actually. Probably only weighs 3 pounds, but pretty cute (...not that cute... ).

that was cute.
We had a 2" monsoon rain the other night (and we've been in a 3-year drought). Kitty hasn't seen much lightning and certainly not sheets of rain, and she was drawn to the window sill like watching a trainwreck. It clearly spooked her, but she had to go back for more.
When she had to get away and jump from the window sill to the bed, she would shake off like she was wet. She went through the routine several times.

So Doc, do you raise them to milk, to sell, or to eat?

Howdy,
I have three goats around my place, just as pets. They're really comical and fun to have around... This video aren't of mine, but similiar...

d) plus they make great 'brush-clearing devices' and can keep an area 'mowed' that is too wet or hilly or tree-covered to get a mower onto. Unlike other livestock, they are browsers, like deer, so never eat down to the point they destroy pasture (they will de-bark small trees, however, so you don't want them near your fruit trees). Plus, the cyanide content of cherry bark and leaves when decaying is toxic, so you want to minimize that exposure. Biggest issue is parasitic infections crossed over from deer via snails on low growth.

Doc, you sound pretty dedicated. Our single female goat had twins during the coldest part of March and she didn't show any interest in them for about the first 12 hours. We brought them inside to warm up and dry off shortly after they were born, then left things to take their natural course. "Momma" and babies eventually got it all sorted out. There was no way we were going to be able to bottle raise those two. What kind of goats do you have?

Nubians, usually. One of them will give about as much milk as a family needs, they are much easier to manage and handle and milk than cows, eat less of course, and are fairly easy to fence in. Biggest problem is coyotes but fence and 'companion animals' like a llama or donkey or great pyrenees dog in with them helps. Need hooves trimmed once in awhile, and occasional injected meds. Everyone trying to be reasonably self-sufficient should consider goats and chickens.

What type of goat? Raised for milk? Meat? Pet?

Mostly to graze pasture and to sell the wethers and sometimes the does. We breed for the usual '4H' and show qualities, so sometimes get good prices, but the revenue rarely approaches the cost of fencing and feed, so it's really mostly a hobby with some 'milk' and 'goat cheese' and 'manured bedding' for the garden as side-benefits. They make excellent brush-clearing devices, too.

Doc, they were asking 9 dollars a pound for goat hams in the Mexican butcher shop yesterday. Most folks down here have Boer goats and real stout fence.
