Favorite load for .250-3000?

Post by Bill in Oregon »

I have an older Savage Model 99 in this caliber with Lyman peep rear and 1:14 twist barrel. This gun has never been terribly accurate with 100-grain bullets, but does pretty well (with my eyes) with the87- and 90-grain slugs. A lot of new powders have come out since I last worked up loads for my 99, but is there anything better than Re15?

I've used H4895 and H335 with 75,87 and 90gr bullets. Havent chronoed them yet
30/30 Winchester: Not accurate enough fer varmints, barely adequate for small deer; BUT In a 10" to 14" barrelled pistol; is good for moose/elk to 200 yards; ground squirrels to 300 metres

250 Savage... its what the 223 wishes it could be...!

I use 4064. Think, RL 15 is similar I believe.

I have one with the 14" twist. 35 grains of IMR 4320, with either Hornady or Speer 87 grain bullets shoot extremely well. Winchester primer.

Here's a coupla more options for you:
I've had good results with 100gn spitzers using 31gn IMR 3031. My best have been with H335 in the 32-33 gn range.

You might also want to try some cast bullet loads. With my eyes, and open sights..I find myself getting more enjoyment shooting cast rounds, offhand, out of my iron-sighted classics and holding the range to 50-75 yds or so.
Makes for a VERY pleasant day at the range.

28 grains of IMR 4320 with a 100 grain bullet worked very well for me. I believe in some old manuals 4320 was listed as THE powder for their accuracy load which is of course not necessarily their highest velocity loading.

That would seem to be quite below potential. 32.0 gr of 4064 which is a bit faster powder is good in the two I have loaded for.
