It looks like a Remington Rider (Ryder), not sure of the spelling.

Re: What kind of rifle is this Apache holding?
On first glance I was thinking a Lee single shot but it does not match the pictures that I found, nor does it match any rifles in de Haas "Single Shot Rifles and Actions" that I have. So I am stumped.

Looks like a Stevens tip-up or copy.

An unloaded one. Otherwise there wouldn't be a pic and photographer would be bald ......

Re: What kind of rifle is this Apache holding?
Not a stevens tip up.... The location of the trigger on a stevens is below the hammer. In this picture, also, the "forend" is longer than a stevens tip up. I thought that was it, too, till I started comparing the pictures.

Stevens tip up
I know a whole lot about very little and nothing about a whole lot.

Re: What kind of rifle is this Apache holding?
I think its close. To me, the reciever, the curve of the trigger and the hammer location are all really close, as is the look of the long barrel....Only the angle and style of the stock is different.

Especially, the rear of the trigger guard. Look on the apaches lap, see the shadow and dip of the reciever? Dead match for the sharps and hankins.

This particular photographer did a lot of NAs all with the same rifle. I didn't have time to find the other photos but I think they are on the internet.

One of the words you can read in the photo appears to say "Apachea"Mescalero wrote:What makes you think he is of the people (Apache)?
Re: What kind of rifle is this Apache holding?
It looks like a Frank Wesson. The forward “trigger”, which is visible in the photograph, unlocks the tip-up action. The actual trigger, which is behind and below it, is hidden by the fold in the blanket.

Re: What kind of rifle is this Apache holding?
It is on the Internet on EBay. Here is what the owner says about it.
Stunning photograph of armed Head Chief of the Warm Springs Apache "Ka-e-te-nay" or "Ge-it-en-eh" ("Fights Without Arrows" or "Cartridges All Gone") by A. Frank Randall of Willcox, Arizona Territory c. 1880s. He was a member of Nana's and Geronimo's band in the early 1880s, and he escaped with Geronimo to the San Carlos Reservation in 1883. He succeeded Victorio as head chief of the Warm Spring Apache (sub group of the Chiricahua). He married "Gouyen" during that war period.
He wears a bandana, vest, blanket, and "cactus kicker" moccasins. He also holds a rifle across his lap. Titled in negative with Randall's purple oval studio stamp verso. Super tone and contrast with edge wear and pinhole at top.

How about a Frank Wesson Rhode Island Militia carbine like here, it has the barrel stud, rear sight might be just by the left hand thumb and the boss in front of the finger loop is visible. It is the sixth picture down.

Re: What kind of rifle is this Apache holding?
With the second picture....the Frank Wesson tip up seems to be the one. The second trigger/guard was obscured with the first picture. Mescalero.....please tell us more about this guy. What are your thoughts?
