new guy here - nickel plating a win 94 pics and questions

Post by mild bill cody »

Hello, Im new to this forum, but I signed up mostly for the knowledge resources here and to learn more about levers.

Here is a 1925 .32 WS Im putting together right now:

When I first got it it was missing all the furniture, barrel bands, rear site and some screws. I built the stock from some manitoba maple and had the bands waterjet'd for me, I have some one-off lever loops coming to me as well.

I plan on getting the whole thing nickel plated as the blueing is worn and the action is scratched up, plus I kind of want something different from my other plain jane post 64 30-30.

My question is: should I get the whole action and action parts nickel plated, or will this cause clearance issues and an action that wont cycle well?

Also, here's my other 30-30 with the proto type loops I had made, the next batch will be a pinch bigger and thicker, all in 304 SS:

edit: cant post pics with photobucket :|

30/30 Winchester: Not accurate enough fer varmints, barely adequate for small deer; BUT In a 10" to 14" barrelled pistol; is good for moose/elk to 200 yards; ground squirrels to 300 metres

+1...
But... I don't know... with that light a wood, nickel plating would really overshadow that figure! Plus and nickel plating can change the dimensions of the metal plated. Sand & polish out the metal scratches and get a deep rust blue. Really offset the color of the wood!

that's very interesting and impressive. don't know about clearance issues, but you can blue fit with 6000 grit if necessary.

I think the plating will complement the stock too. a BBQ carbine. good on ya!

mild bill,

That is some absolutely beautiful wood!

Are you familiar with the color of the hammer/trigger on any stainless steel Smith & Wesson revolver? If you care for that color, you can have Metalife applied to your 94. It will look exactly like that.

This guy: http://mahovskysmetalife.com/ has been doing firearms for more than 30 years. I had him do one of my 94s in 45 Colt. It came back perfect. The finish adds almost zero thickness so clearances aren't a problem. Will not rust. Can hardly recommend the guy enough.

That's some interesting looking wood! Here's some info on plating and other metal finishing processes provided by the best Lever smith I know of...http://levergun.com/tune_up.htm

.

The reason your pics won't post is that they're too large, and need to be reduced on PB down to forum size - under 800 pixels.

Thanks Guys! Just reading through the links you posted now.

Im up in calgary alberta so I wont be able to send the rifle to the place you mentioned without a whole bunch of paperwork and customs and shipping chanrges, but that does sound intruiging.

Guess I got to figure out how to shrink down the picture sizes for the forum, here's some more links to pics, BTW, I like threads with pics:

a closer pic of the butt stock:

I wish I did the leather, a fella in town did that for me.

I do have some extra bands, I had them waterjet but they still need time on a die grinder and a hole through them for the band screw (drilled and tapped). If you can handle a die grinder and tapping them I'll send off a set for the cost of shipping. I guess PM me if your interested to keep this thread from getting misdirected.

If you like the lumber, google flame box elder, there is some pretty amazing lumber out there in comparison to this.

Back to nickel plating: It turns out there is a few different types, but the big difference is electric plating or electroless plating. From what I understand electroless is by far the way to go, in terms of durability and corrosion resistance the difference is substantial. And the thickness should be inconsquential after I sand blast and polish the steel prior to plating.
