gunslinger springs for mod 92.

Post by two bit okie »

This is an answer to ajmd.

#1 the spring kit is only about half of it. you have to pull the rifle all the way down and clean fully. then, you have to go in and remove burrs, and smooth out the machine marks and scratches.

#2 the spring kit replaces the main spring for the hammer with a lighter one. it replaces the trigger return spring. and the ejactor spring.

good luck on the ejector spring as all 3 of mine were too long and I had to use the old one.

I used a brand new fish scale which I do not trust the actual weight, but as a reference poing after the new springs were put in and everything was stoned, the weights to open and close the lever was half, and the trigger was half.

THANKS for the 'xplanation.

I have hones-and-stoned my Marlins and Rossi's enough that they are smooth, and one Marlin has a fancy Wild West trigger-kit, but no new springs on the Rossi's.

I have thought about ordering one of NKJ ("Nate Kiowa Jones") kits, that sounds very similar, but haven't got around to it yet. Too busy replacing magazine followers and flimsy safeties.

Take your ejector spring to Ace Hardware and pick one out with thinner wire and cut to length. If you thin the trigger return spring to half it's thickness on a grinder you can get a really nice light trigger. Just don't let it get hot and thin it over most of it's length, not just the center. I've got stock hammer springs in both my Rossi's and both have 2 lb. triggers.

The reason Rossi uses the heavy springs is because they don't spend man-hours on fitting the parts. Think of the money they save. So, if you just change the springs the gun may not be reliable.
Also, none of the spring kits address the extractor or loading gate. One of the kits comes with a hammer spring that has a too small outside diameter, too. So small it slips into the spring stop sometimes jamming the hammer movement.
One of the kits has a long "U" shaped piano wire replacement spring for the stock flat trigger spring. That spring eventually bends to a point that you barely touch the trigger and the hammer drops. I know sometimes it’s cool to have such a light trigger but what happens next is because the trigger nose isn't pull off the hammer enough the 1/4 cock notch will start hitting the trigger nose as it goes by. First you get failures to fire. Next the trigger/hammer won't stay cocked at all. The hammer just follows the bolt. I have had several sent to me to repair this and by the time I get them I have to replace the trigger and hammer as well.
My philosophy is re-fit the parts so lighter springs can be used and still be reliable.
