stakerjack , I am holding a brand new screw in my hand as I type this.
I just checked it with my Brownells screw checker and that brought back to mind what I found when I was chasing one down a few years back.
That screw is a special thread pitch. Winchester did that back in the day for whatever reason I dont know. This screw will start in the #4 x 36 and the #4 x40 holes of the thread checker but only enter a thread and a half or so before getting tight. The #4 x 36 hole is obviously way to course a thread to work. I think it is #4 x 46 TPI (a special size).
That said, I ordered a new band and screw from Wisener`s (sp?)to replace the damaged one on my rifle. Hope this is of some help. Don`t expect to be able to find a screw or tap at any hardware store ,even on line. I spent hours trying.

They are showing the screw only. Maybe I got the band from elsewhere. Been a while.
