I wonder when we'll get our next John Wayne. We could use him.

I thought Tom Selleck was our next John Wayne, especially after Monty Walsh, then he wound up on Vegas???? Ah well, even John Wayne played some pretty good non-western parts...

:(

There's always Robert Duval :D

I've got 92 of his movies so far, and two walls of portraits and even a life size stand up cardboard display as well as other collectable nick nacks.

I was amazed to find out there were men out there who had never seen a John Wayne movie but I met a cop friend years ago that grew up with Roy Rogers but no Duke. Wow, he missed alot of good strong male role modeling.

I think one of his best lines ever came from "The Alamo", namely the one below. Too bad there wasn't enough room to post it in its entirety.

Republic. I like the sound of the word. It means people can live free, go or come, buy or sell, be drunk or sober, however they choose. Some words give you a feeling. Republic is one of those words that makes me tight in the throat . . . . Some words can give you a feeling that makes your heart warm. Republic is one of those words.

When the U.S. was in need of suppport, The Duke was always there. Once when he and Brigadier Jimmy Stewart were going to some awards ceremony, they passed some war protestors flying a North Vietnamese flag. Jimmy Stewart's son had recently died serving the U.S. in Vietnam, and The Duke walked over to the protestors and started talking to them. The flag came down and the protest broke up. We need more men like The Duke and most of his male Co-Stars.

The world's changing, and the human race is in decline.
Its unfortunate, but we'll never see the likes of him again.

Kinda like jd45, there was a time I didn't appreciate "the Duke". Mostly I just didn't care for the historical inaccuracies in his westerns (firearms sometimes being the least of those), nor did I truly understand politics.
Most folks, (politicians excepted) have some value, and in time will reveal their character. They are also, for the most part, multi-faceted; sometimes in seemingly contradictory ways. That doesn't make them "bad", just human. Subsequently, I have read and studied some of JW's history and conflicting issues during WWII.

Character, and by that I mean strength of character, is sometimes shown by an inherent ability to do the right thing at the right time; and, then at other times, possibly with far more difficulty, it is to overcome making the wrong choice and working to correct that for the rest of your life.

Two of JW's latest movies really changed my opinion of him as a public figure: The Cowboys and The Shootist. There is also the possibility that I'd changed and was better able to appreciate him.

Now, if only some of our far-leftwing socialist politicians could do that![/i]

I like John Wayne's movies, and I certainly appreciate much of the patriotic sentiment that he gave voice to.

It's important to remember however, that he was a actor, acting.

:?
Government office attracts the power-mad, yet it's people who just want to be left alone to live life on their own terms who are considered dangerous.

History teaches that it's a small window in which people can fight back before it is too dangerous to fight back.

FW. I agree that actors are over-rated. They are just pretending to do some things other people ACTUALLY do.

However, John Wayne was alittle different. Many critics say he was a terrible actor... He was the John Wayne version of what ever character he was playing. If JW had been a Cowboy then he would have been Rooster Cogburn!

I knew someone who knew John Wayne pretty well. He was human, and had his mistakes and shortcomings, but he loved America fiercely and thoroughly, and was never bashful about it. He loved the American military men and women. He made the movie "Green Berets" - a very pro-Viet nam and pro-military movie when the rest of hollywierd was tripping over themselves to denounce both. Whatever personal shortcomings he had during WWII to spent the rest of his life trying to make up.

If you look at the roles John Wayne played as an actor, when he strayed from his cowboy/fighting man roles, his movies stunk. As my friend said, it was because when he played himself, he shone. He was an American cowboy - just born too late (like many of us).

The past couple of days i have been looking at the Internet Movie Data Base biography and trivia for several of the old stars .I did not realize how political a lot of them were .Henry Fonda, Kirk Douglas Gregory Peck and Burt Landcaster were very liberal Democrats ,while John Wayne, Ward Bond James Arness,Walter Brennan and James Stewart were very right wing Republicans.Gary Cooper was not hardly as far right as the Duke.

The work "Icon" doesn't suit too many people, but The Duke is one of them.
