Win 25-20 Ammo and Components

Post by Old Savage »

Looking into getting a Marlin 25-20. New ammo is $84 for 50. Bullets are $25 for 100 Speer 75s. Cases are not available. All this at the local gun shop. Looking into availability of components and others experience of accuracy etc with this rifle. It is as new with a stock ding or two. Thanks in advance for any help or info.

If you dive in, I may have a double cavity mould should you decide to cast instead of buying plumbumically challenged cupric projectiles. It is an NEI mould casting (from memory here) a 65 and a 79 gr flatnosed bullet. Very good condition.

Might have some dies too.

OS,
Piece of cake. Don't concern yourself with the little things.

Go get your gun and we will talk. In the meantime, go out and get yourself 32-20 brass and take Brent up on his offer of whatever he is selling.----6

Marlin, like newish - some very minor stock dings $475 - Made in 1990. Don't do any casting. Ordered 200 pcs Starline 32-20 brass. Neat little rifle. :)

OS I picked up a 32-20 same model, vintage earlier this year for around the same amount. I wouldn't pass up a 25-20 if it came along. Hand load a lead bullet around 1450 and prepare to have loads of fun. I worked over the woodchucks last summer and want to try coyotes this winter.
Cheap to load, not to loud, stopping power and accuracy that is surprising!!

Ed that was my first choice but none came along - I have 1,000 of the 85 gr. bullets and 32 mags of both lengths - this should be fun. I briefly had one to work with years ago.

25-20 are fun to shoot, don't even need earplugs. If I ever get the portable losing bench set up I'll order either the Hornady or RCBS neck sizing die set.

How are you getting you 32-20 brass to 25-20? I've never had much luck.

Mack, I have an ancient Herter's neck size die and take the 32-20 down in two steps. First to 7mm with the Herter's, then on to 25 in the 25/20 F.L. sizer (adjusted to eliminate any excess headspace, of course). If I didn't have the handy old Herter's thing I'd be going through my die sets and finding something to sacrifice, such as a 7mm Bench Rest die, which I'd cut off a bunch of so it'd be short enough. But with Star brass I think you might not lose many going direct to 25. Guess I'd try that before worrying about the intermediate.

OS: Make sure you at least neck size them 1st in a 32/20 die, or at least make sure they are aren't dented, then chamfer the case mouths b4 running thru your dies. Also the R-P 86gr FP's are very accurate and expand easily while hanging together. I start them at 2350fps out of a 256WM, when hit they the sand bank behind the 200 yard targets they will turn themselves inside out. The jacket is still attached.
30/30 Winchester: Not accurate enough fer varmints, barely adequate for small deer; BUT In a 10" to 14" barrelled pistol; is good for moose/elk to 200 yards; ground squirrels to 300 metres

I have a 1892 Winchester 25-20 with a pristine bore shoots factory ammo very accurately, I'm still working out an accurate load with our locally produced 85 grain coated lead bullets, at the moment I'm trying 8.5 grains of AR2205 which is H4227 not as accurate as the old Winchester jacketed factory load but my lead loads knocks over silhouettes.
I'm more partial to shooting the 32-20 as it is less finicky to load but I would get that Marlin for sure.

87 pages on reloading the 25-20 on the Marlin owners forum hope it helps regards Dallas

Oh yeah! This is the main thing when forming any case to a smaller size -- get the dang dents out! Somehow when telling Mack and OS how to be successful making 25/20's from 32/20's I forgot to put this first step in. Thanks for correcting me, 3leg!
