.30 Remington Data needed for 160 gr FTX bullets

Post by ChuckKY »

I bought and refinished an old model 8 Remington and could use some help obtaining reloading data. I have been told to use 30-30 Win. data, but I don't have any information on the newer 160 gr. boat tail FTX Hornady bullets for the 30-30 Win. I have 3 Hornady manuals, but none include the new FTX bullets. I have 6 different manuals, but can't seem to keep up without going broke with the newer manuals. I have been able to locate a handful of brass from a gentleman in Alaska and dies, got the new box of bullets with rifle and would like to use them. Not going to shoot old gun a lot, just would like to take a couple of deer with it. I have IMR 3031, IMR 4064, Win. 748 and H 335 powders that seem to fit the bill as far as powders go. I really would appreciate any help if anyone has a newer manual. Thanks, Chuck

No help with the data, but enjoy that gun. I had a Remington 81 in 35 Remington years ago and it's one that I kick myself for letting go.

BenT, I have scrolled all over their webpage and can't find the data. Where did you find it at? I'm not the sharpest knife in the drawer when it comes to these computer related things. Thanks, Chuck

When the FTX came out they had a link for load data for all those bullets but it isn't there anymore probably because it is their 9th edition load manual. Which I happen to have. The only loads listed for your powders are Win 748 and H335.

Win 748 29.4gr - 1900fps /30.8gr - 2000/ 31.5 - 2050 MAX

H335 27.1gr - 1900fps / 28.5 - 2000 / 29.2 - 2050 MAX

H4895 28.4gr - 2050 / 28.8 - 2100 MAX

LVR (leverevolution) 32.4gr - 2100 / 34.8 - 2200 / 37.0 - 2300 Max

Make sure to use the 30-30 FTX number 30395 not the 308 MX bullet which is different and will be to long.

Thank you for the data. I may need to buy their new manual. I have 2 of their older manuals, but they where obsolete before I got to use either one apparantly. Thanks again, Chuck

I bought the 8th addition and was disappointed. The 9th has a lot of the newer bullets ,powders and cartridges that I was looking for.

Congrats on a fine acquisition. Yes, 30/30 and 30 Rem have identical case capacities, so data is the same. I haven't used the 160 Hornady so don't have any specific advice there but I think along dixie cat's lines (170 grain data plus a grain). Mine likes the LVR powder, 170 grain Hornady, but it needs a firm "factory crimp" applied via the Lee factory crimp die to steady up the velocity spread and get the accuracy.

This fellow has 30 Rem brass at $50/100 http://shop.reedsammo.com/main.sc
