Besides the obvious ones.....John Wayne and Clint
I watched Tall in the Saddle today and George "Gabby" Hayse
has always been a favorite of mine....
Another is Jack Elam...He was the crooked eyed old man
in Rio Lobo...
Others are Ben Johnson and Harry Carey Jr.
and of course James Stewart!

Robert Duvall, Tommy Lee Jones, were good in "Lonsome Dove" and Kevin Costner did a great job in "Open Range". Jasson Robards, Charles Bronson, and Henry Fonda were great in "Once Upon a Time in the West".

And then there was "The Wild Bunch" with William Holden, Ernest Borgnine, Robert Ryan, Edmond O'Brien, Warren Oates, Jamie Sanchez, Ben Johnson and other great Western Actors.

Ward Bond, James Arness, Gary Cooper, come to mind too.

I always figured Ben Johnson was most likely a good ol' boy in real life, that's why his parts in movies seemed so good, and Selleck seems that way to me also. Ben Johnson, Tom Selleck, and DuVall, they would have made quite a trio in a great western.
To hell with them fellas, buzzards gotta eat same as the worms.

Kurt Russell and Val Kilmer. Colin Ferrell did good in "American Outlaws" too. Those born to wear gun leather, cowboy boots, and a Stetson are as follows in no particular order: Clint Eastwood, Charles Bronson, Robert Duvall, Emilo Estevez, Charlie Sheen, Tommy Lee Jones, Kevin Costner, and Tom Selleck.

Alan Ladd as Shane
Robert Mitchum
Kirk Douglas "Man from Snowy River" was excellent
Gary Cooper "High Noon"
Roy Rodgers
James Garner "Maverick"
Ward Bond "Wagon Train" to many movies to list
Steward Granger

Gregory Peck, Charelton Heston, Chuck Connors, Burl Ives in "The Big Country"

Rock Hudson. "Winchester 73" He was the Indian chief with a fake nose. Tonu Curtis also had a bit part as a Calvary soldier. One of the best westerns ever.

Ya'll mentioned Harry Carey Jr. How about his dad Harry Carey? He was the Marshal in Angel and the Badman.

More if I think about it. Lots of oldies. How about Tom Mix?

Robert Duval, Tom Selleck and Sam Elliot, John Wayne and Ben Johnson, Clint...all the stock favorites.

For offbeat movies:

I think I'm one of the only ones who liked Thomas Hayden Church in the Broken Trail. I thought he did he great job in the shadow of Duval. Not the best movie though.

Toby McGuire in Ride with the Devil was excellent.

Always like the Cowboy movies that tie in with a Mexican theme:
Gary Busey and Willie Nelson in Barbarossa

Richard Farnsworth in the Grey Fox

David Carradine as Cole Younger in The Long Riders

That's all I can think of right now.

Of course, John Wayne.

I loved Robert Duvall and Tommy Lee Jones in Lonesome Dove. It's my all time favorite movie.

Tom Selleck and Sam Elliot are two of my regular favorites.

I don't generally care for Clint Eastwood, although I liked High Plains Drifter, The Outlaw Josey Wales, and Unforgiven.

Great line indeed....made more sense to folks back then I guess, before mass brainwashing had begun in our schools. As mentioned, Steve McQueen in Tom Horn was one of the greats too....too bad we lost him early. He's one of those guys that you can't stop watching.

Ben Johnson, Tom Selleck, Lee Marvin (I can't believe nobody named him yet). Ben Johnson was a real cowboy. I knew that all along as he is one of the few that could ride and usually rode good looking well broke horses.

John Wayne as "Eathan" in The Searchers. My favorite western. I watched it again just a couple of weeks ago.

Ward Bond as "The Reverend/Texas Ranger..."The war's over Eathan." Wayne as Eathan..."Maybe for you, Reverend, but I've still got my sword!"

And my all time favorite line from a Western...

Eathan answering Marty when they turned back after their first year. "Oh, we'll find them. We'll find them... Just as certain as the turning of the Earth."

Wayne in Fort Apache and She wore a yellow ribbon, with Victor McGloghlin and Ben Johnson. I had heard that John Ford added Ben Johnson to his western ensemble cast becaused he loved the way that Ben rode a horse.

Tom Selleck, Sam Elliot in their series of made for TV Westerns The Hacketts. Selleck for Monte Walsh. Good stuff.

The original Monte Walsh with Lee Marvin. In some ways a better movie.

The whole cast of the Magnificent 7 (except Robert Vaughn) Second Favorite western.

Jimmy Stewart in Winchester 73 and The Naked Spur.

It seems I can't separate the best Western Actors from the best western movies they did. I do love a good western movie.

Well OF COURSE John Wayne is Numero UNO
then it looks like to me that Tom Selleck and Sam Elliot are next in line My favorite all time western is WInchester 73 with Jimmy Stewart so I cant let him out . Some one mentioned one of his other I like Naked Spur to ( he used a Marlin 94 in that one )
Glen Ford in "The Fastest Gun Alive " was also a great old flick .
Arthur Hunnicut is the greatest character actor in westerns IMHO! when he says "Krotin OIL? Well I'll be a suck egg Mule " In Rio LOBO its classic .
Alan Ladd was fine in Shane but unfortunatley for me I had read the book several times prior to ever seeing and movie and when he "FANNED " the gun I lost it and lost my respect for the Movie .
Tommy Lee Jones could not be topped in Lonesome DOve and did a great job in a recent one called the MISSING ( I beleive ) .
I LOVED TOMBSTONE and cant say enough about how well Val Kilmer and Kurt Russel did in that one .
Loved the acting in TOM HORN with Steve Mcqueen but the story line left a lot to be desired .

In no particular order...

Tom Selleck as Mathew Quigley
Clint Eastwood as Josey Wales
Chief Dan George as Lone Watie
Richard Boone as Paladin
Jimmy Stewart in Winchester '73
The entire cast of Silverado, including Linda Hunt as Stella
Val Kilmer as Doc Holliday
Sam Elliott in pretty much anything with a hat
Clevon Little as the Sheriff in Blazing Saddles

don't know if space westerns count, but the crew of Serenity, on Firefly,
Captain Malcolm Reynolds
Zoe
Jayne Cobb

[that oughta stir 'em up a little]

Gryphon
