Range Report from Texas shoot

Post by RKrodle »

We had our shoot today and everything went great, the weather even held out for us. We started out at 100 yards sighting in and doing some general plinking. We had a bit of lunch and headed to the 50 yard line to check POI compared to 100 and more general plinking. After we finished up at the fifty I broke out the CHARGING BUFFALO!!! This turned out be be a blast, no pun intended. I made up a sled from 2 inch square tubing with a wood target frame. It was pulled with a cable to make it charge. I'm posting mpegs at the bottom of all of us taking turns. Thanks to the expert coaching of 86er we were soon laying down a deadly wall of fire.

I would like to thank the forum members, 86er, Piller and son, BrianSH, and neil mitchell, for coming. I enjoyed meeting and shooting with ya'll.
Also attending was my son Cody, nephews Eric, Robert and his son, Jake and Eric's young cousin Caden.

Nice set of photo's. What were the percentages of good hits on target. And, comparatively how did the first side shot look compared to the dynamic shots.

The percent of good hits on target varied with the shooter some, but on average was probably about 50 percent. Most all shots where on target, but not necessarily good stopping or killing shots. Everybody did good on placing the first shot where they aimed. But some of us placed our shots like we were shooting a whitetail, just behind the shoulder, instead of trying to break down the shoulder. Also the vitals on a cape buffalo are further forward, so a behind the shoulder shot doesn't really hit much.

But boy we had a good time and some laughs.

The one where 86er is shooting my Puma shows how fast he really is. He fired 7 total times out of a .480 Ruger carbine. The action was slicked up a little bit with that new Smith & Wesson Dry Lube, but his skill really made the difference. The Krodle Safari Trainer looks like a winner to me. Maybe it could be offered for sale at a Safari Club International convention. Ricky, you might get famous.

I labeled that one "Fast 86er", He was really cooking and all were good shots  .

Sorry I missed out. Certainly looks to have been my loss. Moving targets are a real eye-opener!

Looks like everyone had a good time. But... :P What's with all the "dancin' around" as yon paper buff approaches!? :P

Griff, Sorry you couldn't make it, I was hoping you could. We had a lot of fun. There was a little two-stepping going on as the buff got close.

Bis, I hope to do this again in the fall, maybe around the end of October or first part of November. I'll make a post to let everyone know and your are more then welcome to come.

The metal skids it traveled on were the reason for the moving a little out of the way. Also, when you are having so much fun, it is hard to not move a little. The moving target is an idea which really needs to be patented.

RKrodle- Thanks for the invite. Oct./Nov. gives me time to get all the guns sited in and a stockplie of ammo. Hopefully gas won't be $4.00 a gallon by then.

I am about ten miles north of Crockett so I am guessing about 2+ hours.

RKrodle When we want to go shopping in the "big city" we go to Lufkin, about 50 miles east of here and I get to go to Academy. We are in Latexo that has a blinking yellow light and a general store, so when you are driving down 19 S. and get close to laterxo, don't blink or you will miss it :D

Bis, the town I'm closest to is Caddo Mills, they ain't got no blinking light :D . Caddo Mills is so small, if you even think about blinking you'll miss it  .

bj94, You and your daughter are welcome to come. I'll try to make some more improvements over the summer. I don't have a shooting bench right now. I'm thinking of building one on skids so I can tow it to the yardage I want.

RIHMFIRE, Boy did we ever have a blast. :D It's an eye opener when you look and see were your hits are. I shot it in the horn one time, he probably would of wound up stomping a mud hole in me.
