I think you are in the right ballpark. This box came with the rifle when I bought it about 15 years ago, a Winchester Mod 70. I believe it was probably the only box of shells the old guy ever had with the rifle since he bought it new, and the serial # puts the rifle as a 1959. There are 4 rounds left in the box.

I remember as a kid, a lot of the .22 I bought back then was Western.
I think it was 85 cents a box.

I think $20-$25/box as what I paid for 375 factory loads. I think the guy was just getting rid of the ammo after selling his gun. None were quite that old though.

Cool box.

Ted, did you get a deer with your 45/70? I saw a some older boxes like that in a gunshop last month and cant remember where it was. Sure brings back memories seeing stuff like ghat.
30/30 Winchester: Not accurate enough fer varmints, barely adequate for small deer; BUT In a 10" to 14" barrelled pistol; is good for moose/elk to 200 yards; ground squirrels to 300 metres

The online inflation calculator says $6.50 in 1959 dollars is $52.04 in 2014 dollars.

There should be a numeric and alpha code stamped on the box tab(s) or on the side. If you provide the code, I can tell you the Month, Year, Production Line and sometimes another factor.

No, I never saw a legal buck all season. Saw lots of young bucks, but they have to have 4 points on one side to be legal. Looks good for the future though.

It's missing one of the end flaps Joe, but I'll look at it tonight when I get home and see if there's any code on it.

.

I used to like the C-I-L CF ammo, for my deer rifle(s), back in the early 70's - it was inexpensive (compared to Winchester/Western or Remington), performed well on game, and was accurate enough.

At the time, I liked the "inexpensive" part best, raising 3 kids.

I have fired a lot of that CIL ammo. My Dad used to work at the factory where it was made and could get factory seconds. Usually nothing major especially the shotgun ammo. They usually had either a bad crimp or double stamped shot size. I still have a few around.

Claybob,

here's a current affairs article that underscores the point in a novel way:
