Tang-ceiver sights for the Savage 99

The Lyman 57SA I bought from 1886 just arrived this afternoon and is now sitting on trusty 300 Savage awaiting better weather to do some shooting. Here she is looking, I believe, quite classy:

When these Savage 99's first started finding their way to my place (only an embarrassingly few years ago) I knew the tang sight was a good option for these older ones without a tang safety. But I didn't know about the receiver sights that go in the tang position, and I like them better than tang sights for these rigs that go to the field. And no, I have never busted off a tang sight while hunting but it just feels somewhat vulnerable to me. So here is my present stable of sights. The Williams sight in the near position uses the rear scope base holes for those newer weapons so equipped; the Lymans use the tang sight holes.

Nice sights. Goes to show that where there's a will (to make a precision sight for a specific firearm), there IS a way...

Looking good! I've got a Williams sight on one of my 99's as well. I'm also interested to see how that 300 Savage shoots. Got a 99 that I've been sloooowly putting together since last August.

I have a Redfield peep that I'm saving for a 99 when I buy one I think I my have to sell it so the perfect rifle will come along.
That's a nice looking rig.

None of my 99's are anything that would get a collector excited but they all have pretty decent bores. And these 3 are Savage all the way: besides the 300 Savage with 1886's sight newly installed, the middle rifle with the old Lyman is 303 Savage that you look at and think "if only that baby could talk" because of all the character she wears. And the near one with the Williams is 250 Savage from great friend Vern that has gone lots of miles horseback in a scabbard and shot a fair bunch of deer.

And Pete, when I looked at your picture with the Williams sight I have to admit I had to jerk mine back out to check. Yep, my Williams is made only to go on a rifle with scope mount holes -- wouldn't work in the tang holes even if there is a hole under the crossbar.

Yes it's a .303. I am fortunate to have dies and a few cases to keep me going for a while up here. Love the Savages.....

That's the stuff I've been using. Thanks to PRVI we can shoot these old .303's happily once again without having to treat each case like it was made of gold. Much thanks, PRVI!
