OT--MUSHROOMS !

Post by getitdone1 »

It's that time of year again although a week or two early here in SW Indiana.

Anyone finding morels where you live? If you're south of me it'll give me an idea when they'll be pop'in-up around here.

One of the sure things that gets me into the woods with one of my guns is mushrooms.

Do you have a best way of fix'in um? I just put them in salt water for an hour or so, rinse them off good--no bugs please!--and roll them in flour. May use egg batter too this year and compare.

Few years ago I found some really big ones. Yellow morels and one about 8 inches tall and a few around 6 inches.

Is the record morel about 14 inches? Seems like I read that somewhere.

Oh man, Don! You've brought back memories of my childhood! My Italian grandfather used to go with my mother & brothers & I to the forest preserves in the SW Chicago area to hunt 'shrooms. I don't think we found Morels, but that was a long time ago. I do know we found Sheepsheads, tho. What a fun time it was! I like em sauteed in butter wit finely diced onions. MMMMMMMM-Good! jd45

Yep! Been out finding them around the bases of all the cottonwoods around here!

Me too :D

We roll them in flour or cracker crumbs. AFTER a good salt water soaking. I split them in half lengthwise and then throw them in the skillet. I like to save backstrap and grouse to fry them with and they pick up much of the flavor. But still have that delicious 'shroom' flavor in the background :D

Here in So. Cal I look for morels end of Ap. There is only a few places
and its at 7000 ft. The Sierra foothills are pretty good also but theres
alot of competition for them. My wife simmers them in butter then
finnishes them with a splash of creamed sherry and plops em over
a giant bone in ribeye.A cold amber beer or two and you want to take
a nap. Good Luck Hunting

BB gun on full auto. Like to clip'em off at the base. Helps keep my fingernails clean.

None around here yet, but the ramps (wild onions) are coming up. With all the spring rains coming they'll be poppin' up soon.
