I don't usually buy new furniture, but...

Post by AJMD429 »

I have handed-down heirloom stuff (more of sentimental than monetary value), stuff I've made myself, and lots of stuff others have given us when they moved or upgraded, but seldom see furniture that is well-enough made to shell out much money for. This might be an exception...

I hate buying furniture! Mostly because I've had family in the business, and I know what kind of markup there is in that business. That $900 sofa you bought cost them about $300!

Price isn't out of line with custom furniture. One off and small run stuff is very hard to produce cheaply.

I like the table better than the shelves or entertainment center. Those big thick shelves and sides look wrong and to me pretty obvious.

I never buy new furniture because like you say Doc, its not worth the bucks you pay. Theres lots of rich people around here who are constantly upgrading every couple of years and I go to the local auctions and pay .10 on the dollar. Just last fall, we bought a $2,000 couch and loveseat that was imported from Canada for $180. Was only 2 years old. Rich folk always wear clean clothes and dont let their dogs on the furninture.

We have a blast with it, use it for a few years, then go out and buy more when it starts to become unsightly.

Out in the pasture, off to the side is where I have a pile of old springs, etc. I pull the old furniture out there with the Jeep or the Kubota and light her up.

I do buy new mattresses though and never scrimp on those. Theres nothing more important to your daily well being like a quality mattress and quality boots.---------6
