OT: SimpliSafe Home Security System

Post by kaschi »

Hi all:

I've been hearing ads for this company on the radio for a while. Have any of you had experiences with this system or know people who have? The idea seems to be really good in that the system, being totally cellular, uses no telephone connections should you ever decide to give up your land line at some point in the future. At $15 per month, it's about half the price or less of other "big names" in the home security business and the company's website states that the system is a piece of cake to install. Any input would be appreciated.

I believe this is the SimpliSafe website: www.simplisafe.com

My thought is that if it's operated via cell phone it is also more than likely to get hacked.

I don't know why no one makes a box that calls you directly without having to pay a monitoring service.

Then you would not have to pay a monitoring service.

Keep in mind that anything that uses the net (access through computers or smart phones) can be hacked easily, so don't put any cameras or mics inside your house. You won't have any control over who can activate or view the video feed.

not exactly. they are servers, but they can be defended with routers and firewalls.

however, the idea of a subscription service interdicting a crime in process seems a little far-fetched.

Please don't ask me how to wire it up, but I know you can rig a motion sensor off an outside light to a burn phone, to call YOUR cell phone....

True, I should have been more specific. The common subscription home security systems that send video feed to your smart phones or accessed from a PC are easily susceptible to hacking.
