1876 Winchester 40-60wcf 210 express

Post by Dusty Texian »

The rifle is a Model 1876 Winchester circa 1884. Caliber 40-60wcf 210 Express. The old 40-60 wcf has been around since 1884 and has seen its share of frontier use,but still snaps open- close very sharp. This one happens to be the most accurate 40-60 that I have ever owned. Loaded with the original 210gr. bullets and 58gr.Swiss 2ff bp. std. Winchester primers,it will hold its own with any other open sighted bp. rifle I own. On mediun and big game inside of 150 yd. it will kill like lightning. Think of it as a .38-40 on steriods . This one with the 22" oct. barrel make for a powerfull and handy package. ,,,,,DTImage

Very nice old gun. A real sense of accomplishment when you harvest a deer with a gun made 130 years ago.

Glad that you fellows like the photo of the old rifle. .I have not chronographed the load for this rifle. In load development ,I went up and down with powder charges to find its sweet spot . Keeping everything else unchanged.I did try a card wad under the bullet ,but found it was not needed.I have fired up to 14 rounds back to back @ 200yd.,with no cleaning and the 22'' barrel held accurate. That told me the powder compression ,lube and powder choice was working well in this cartridge, barrel lenth combo. It is a mild medium bore bp. cartridge that is not that powder and lead hungry but gives a little more (umph) when shooting game.,,,,,DT

Nice, wish that lever could talk to; am really surprised the 40/60 isn't more popular.
30/30 Winchester: Not accurate enough fer varmints, barely adequate for small deer; BUT In a 10" to 14" barrelled pistol; is good for moose/elk to 200 yards; ground squirrels to 300 metres

250 Savage... its what the 223 wishes it could be...!

Sounds like a good enough reason to buy another rifle to me!I cast some bullets out of my Winchester 40-82wcf mould today. They came out @ 406 and 255gr. Loaded some in the 40-60wcf cases over a compressed load of 55 gr.2ff Swiss bp. for testing at the range latter this wk.Hope they shoot good ,I like the 255gr. bullet better than the 210 gr. for hunting, just hope the old Winchester does. ,,,DT

Image The old 1876 Winchester 40-60 wcf caliber, liked the 255gr. bullet over 55 gr 2ff Swiss bp. This is a three shot group @ 50 yd. Aiming point was the square tape under the group. First shot was the upper most and two below it is from the fowled bore. This 40-60 wcf shoots!!!!!! ,,,DT

Thanks for the Kind words fellows. The old 40-60 Winchester has taken untold numbers of Wild Hog in my hands ,some Wt. Deer , and a any Varmint that I run across that needs trimming back.It is a handy to take along rifle and I manage three Hunting ranchs here in Texas, so it gets a good bit of use . Wild hog are looked upon as vermin by most land owners, and shot on site .I try for head shots if close enough! The 40-60 wcf will take even the large Boars down with a shoulder shot fairly quick.,,,,,DT

Had the old 1876 Winchester 40-60wcf out at the 100yd. range today. The load was 210.gr. cast soft lead bullet from an original Winchester mould @.406" over 55 gr. Swiss 2ff bp. std. lg. rifle primer and bees wax tallow and olive oil, mixed for lube. The five shot group at top of target. The old 76 is ready for the up coming hunt.,,Image,,DT

Had a little luck hunting with the old 1876 Winchester in 40/60 wcf. Used the 210gr. bullet and Swiss bp. load to take two wild pig and one Wt. buck, this past wk. Here is a pic. of the young boar. Shot at about 75yd.Image The old 76 did the trick again! DT.

And one of the Wt. buck, shot with same rifle and load at 110yd. low in the chest . He sprang up at the shot and went less than 30yd. before expiring .The old 187Image6 Winchester and 210gr. bullet bp. load is still as effective today as it was 130+ yrs. ago. ,,DT

That is a very good five-shot group at 100 yards. With groups like that and the game you are collecting with that old rifle, it is a sure-fire keeper.

Thanks for the kind words fellows. Hunting with the old time guns and equipment has renewed my interest in hunting. Most of my fellow hunters use modern equipment, and the newest and most up to date rifle & cartridge combo. For me its leather wool black powder and old time guns. Heck my skinning knife was made from one of Dads old shoeing rasp and mesquite wood from the ranch. After dressing the deer in the pic. I kept all the tallow that was to be had for making my bullet lube . Right now waiting for the howling north wind to stop for the next hunt. Watching the smokehouse fire as the belly meat , hams and jerky smoke. Yep I'm stuck in the past , and Happy with it!,,,,,,DT
