New rifle twist rate question

Post by dkmlever »

Just bought a new 1 in 12 twist rate 308 rifle (barrel is 22 inches long). I have not even received it yet, but am wondering at that twist rate, which bullet weight would be the most accurate?

I believe 150-165 gr. should be fine. Try others but the heavy`s (190-200) may be unstable at longer distances unless pushed to the max velocity.

1 in 11.5 stabilizes 168's very well.

1 in 12 would presumably do well in the 160-170 range.

In years of playing with the 308/30-06, I have found that 150's shoot the best in the 1-12 and 173's are best in the 1-10.......with standard velocity/pressure levels. As anyone knows, there is lots of leeway in that range and multiple variances change these accuracy levels like the weather. The 06 twist of 1-10 shoots em all pretty good.

Weird things happen...I had a 99 Savage in 308 with the 1-12 that would shoot the 190 Sierra Matchkings like gangbusters....as good as any bolt gun I played with

As I'm a cast bullet fanatic, the differences really show up....easily......the 215 Lyman is a natural in the 1-10 but so-so in the 308.

Oh man, don't worry about it....experiment and have fun.....life is short.....as there is no shooting after the dirt is in your face.

Look up anything Frank Marshall wrote on the 308.....he was "the man"------6
