Reproduction Ammo. Boxes ??

Post by cshold »

Yesterday I scored two of these handmade boxes on eBay. 8)
Got them for US $15.00 a box, normally they sell for US $20.00 a box.
I do intend to carefully cut them open and fill them with my hand loaded .38 WCF ammo.
I would like to coat them with something to add a layer of protection.
Would a couple coats of clear shellac or varnish work?
Any other ideas?

if you can peel apart box's to lay flat, maybe clear plastic laminate might work. You will have to slightly score folds with a ruler and a butter knife so it will bend back on the folds. a thin layer laminate will work best.

That indeed would be the best protection.
Unfortunately these are not like a shotgun shell box with a single seam that can be carefully separated then glued back together.

I need a protective coating that can either be sprayed on or applied streak free with a brush.

Every time I see a post with antique ammunition boxes, or replicas, I get the urge to make a few more of these! :D

Just gotta love the old vintage ammo. boxes. 8)
I can spend hours looking at pictures of the detailed graphics on old shotgun shell boxes.
Seems there was much more care and pride went into even ammo. boxes back in the day.

If the labels are plain paper, not plastic-coated, then polyurethane, varnish or shellac would work... if the paper is coated, I would stick to polyurethane.

Lefty,
I agree, I think spray on is the way to go.
Think I'll hit the local craft store and see what they recommend.
Need something that's non yellowing and won't distort the print or damage the label's in anyway.
These boxes are made and shipped from across the big pond so I have some time till I have them in hand.
