Need the Collective Wisdom of the Board

Post by Griff »

I have 3 pieces of brass... of the type that costs upwards of $3.00/per. Each has the wall of a spent primer stuck in it. I've soaking, even my hand type pocket reamer... but alas, no joy! Has anyone ever experienced this?

Never even seen that happen. Soak in Kroil and a dental pick maybe? Or grind the end off the proper diameter number or letter bit to "shave" it off the sides?

How long were the primers in before decapping?

Loaded them up a day or so before the match... decapped the 60 or so shot and dropped 'em in my dish-soap solution to soak before leaving the range... rinsed them off and then tumbled them. I didn't find the problem until I started hand priming the batch.

Man, does that look familiar. I have one just like it.

Mine is .45-70 Starline and a CCI BR2. Happened just this winter (or rather, I found it this winter. probalby happened last fall). anyway, what to do? I've got mine on my loading bench where I can stare at it a lot.

I had this happen on quite a few custom brass 10 bore shells. Those primers were 2-piece affairs and they came apart just like this.

The solution then was to screw in a #12 bottoming tap (ground a little bit more on the tip) and then pull straight out with a drill press. You might salvage one or two of these that way. But I don't now what size tap to suggest. Trial and error until then. If you find a size that works before I get to it, let me know.

Very small stone on a dremel. Thin the wall of the primer cup in a couple places enough to bend it in with a sharp pick and it will fall out.

Yep, will do.

Yep... all the other cases in that batch.

If I get 'em out, I'll post pics and the method... I kinda like Ted's idea... if it works it'll be quick and easy or really baaad!

Hey Griff, glad you got it figured out. I never realized how similar your cases are to my 11mm, very similar shape, just scaled down and without the beveled rim. It appears that Bertram brass cases for my 11mm are now also over $3 per now. Yikes. -Tutt

Have had the same thing happen to some 32 H&R mag brass, but it doesn't cost near as much as your stuff!!

Can't tell you how many times I've done that to remove a broken bolt from a cylinder head or block before.

Glad it worked for ya Griff.

Griff,
Glad to see that you got it taken care of. I have had the same thing happen a few times in the past.
Having access to a lathe, I chucked the case in and started running 3/16" drill ( or was it a 13/64...i dont remember which) into the primer. Part way in the primer grabbed ahold of the drill and backed right out on the drill when the drill was extracted where it was easily removed.

Just the opposite happened to me the end of last week... I was runnin' along loading .38Spls on my Dillon and as I neared the end of one stick of primers... I glanced around to see if I had another stick of primers all loaded, ready-to-go... and my eyes fell on my loaded round tray... What's this I thought, why's there no primer in that round? Inspected the bin and found 10 rounds w/o a primer!

Ever seen a .38Spl case with a LARGE primer pocket? Those cases were out of production back in the '60s, IIRC! Yet, here they are, still in my cleaned, ready to load bin, mixed in with about 3,000 other small primer cases. And to boot, they were all NICKEL cases! Who sez nickel cases don't have any longevity?

I decap before putting the brass in the solution. And, at the most, it's in there for a few days, and it gets agitated every so often... I don't see the harm as long as everything is "in solution", especially the amounts in dishsoap..
