By golly, I have outdone my wildest expectations!

Post by flightsimmer »

With snow on the ground and nothing much to do, I dug out my Hartford, SAA copy by Armi San Marcos in .45 Colt.
I ordered a spring pack from Wolff Gun Spring and proceeded to see what I could do to make it better.
Well, a couple of hours later I have the finest, smoothest single action I have ever experienced.
And now I'm looking for something else to do.
Dag nabit.

That is great to hear ! But you have now started down that slippery slope of gun tinkering. You will be looking at all your guns to determine if they need improvement or personal touch. Expanding your knowledge base and pride of doing things your self. There is no hope for you now. You might as well get the correct screw driver bit set , brass punches and some hockey pucks. More tools will come. I will look forward to your next gun project post. Now go tinker with a camera and get some pics ! :D :D

Well I would, and I've got some but I have a hard time trying to resize them to work on this forum.

My son has one of those that he won for "Top Overall" @ Raton in 1993... EMF Hartford, completely gone thru by Oglesby & Oglesby that fully the equal of my Colt, also rebuilt by O&O just a few years ago! Congrats... the only thing you'll need to watch for is wear on the hammer cam for the locking bolt.

Some of the free picture-hosting websites, like www.postimage.org , have a resizer built in, that you set (800 pixes, max) prior to uploading pics from your computer to the host.

Once pics are uploaded, copy each pic's "direct url" & "paste" the direct url here (or elsewhere, for that matter), then, with no spacing, bracket each url front/rear with , and the pic9s) will propagate when you finish the post.

If you want to email pics to me, I can easily resize them right on the desktop of the IMac, and send them back to you. PM if interested.

You use a Mac?!? Well, THAT explain EVERYTHING....

I used to, but about the time OS X came out I got my own PC at work, so eventually everything at home got cycled out into PCs. We were on the MS program at work so I could buy the entire Office suite for home use for pennies and keep everything the same. Of course, it was PC Office 2008 that finally caught up to my Mac Office 2001

Speaking of MS Office....there is a picture utility included. I use it to open photos, crop them, and export as sizes smaller than 1000x1000, then save under another name. Easy to use and didn't cost me any extra

At the command, run, or start window, type in ois and see if it is installed.

What that explains is totally, 100% trouble free operation. I got tired of "messing" with PCs, and those blue screens really suck.

You were right!
I dug out my Cimarron Arms model P Jr. in .38 special and did the same to it.
It came out every bit as good as the Hartford and I am very pleased with both of them.
Now, what's next, hmmmmm. http://i366.photobucket.com/albums/oo10 ... 270010.jpg

This has been the main problem with the old ASM's. They were patterned off the early 1st.gens which had really sharp finger tips on the bolt that just chews the cam off the hammer and the gun goes out of time. The colt fix was to use a hardened pressed in cam. I have repaired some of the ASM's the same way.
So, flightsimmer, some cheap advice. get some heavy grease, like axle grease or those small yellow top G.I. gun grease pots. Then use a Q-tip and dab some on the cam. You can do this without disassem. Just cock the hammer back and reach down in along side to the cam. That heavy grease will stay with you under recoil and any blow back.

Mine already has a hardened cam pin installed into the hammer but I went ahead and polished it and made sure everything was slick and smooth.
I've been using case lube for lubricant it seems to do a good job.
I'm not really sure if mine is a 1st or 2nd generation copy.

IIRC, EMF had them done up with a screw retained cylinder pin with the "bullseye" ejector rod end, and with the crescent ejector rod and a cross frame type cylinder pin retainer. Both are 1st gen copies... just one was a BP frame (screw retainer) and the later version with the cross frame retainer.

If it has the pressed in bolt cam it was most likely a warranty repair from EMF. They didn't come from ASM with it. It's even possible it was one I worked on. I was an EMF warranty station back then.

You will probably be just fine with the case lube if you are sure they have pressed in hardened cams. Even if they don't if you don't shoot them a lot they will probably do just fine. however, if you decide to take up CAS grease em with heave grease. Case lube won't take the abuse.

True, the ASM's from EMF were available as BP frames with the set screw and pre-war with the cross latch. But, both had early 1st gen style bolts with the cam eating sharp fingers.

Well, I could not be more pleased.
This morning my Son in law and I went out to the range where he is a member.
At 25 yards I was able to shoot this target on the first try, you cannot get any better in my book.
At first I thought I had missed the target all together until I walked downrange, my what a nice surprise.Image

No, I took the picture while it was still on the target board.
I wanted a picture incase I was just seeing things.

It's a joke! I'm accusing you of making the holes with a #2 :D

I usually have to take a picture because I forget where I hit by the time I walk all the way back to the bench.
