Really nice

Post by Ysabel Kid »

My wife and I attended our daughter's 7th grade recognition ceremony yesterday. Our daughter was recognized seven (7) times at the ceremony, including highest average in a Social Studies class, Junior Beta Club, second place in the annual Science Fair, and A-B Honor Roll in the GT program. We're very proud!

They announced a few retirements and people moving on to other roles/other schools. When they announced that the school's Resource Officer was moving on, he got an enthusiastic standing ovation from all the students! It was really nice to see, because the cheering was so heartfelt. Everyone - the students, teachers and parents all respected the Officer, who had been at the school for 6 years. He was there when Y2K went through middle school.

They never had police officers in school when I was a lad. Times have changed; even in good schools in good districts they need Resource Officers. It says a lot when the RO can make a such a positive impact on everyone in the school and community. I feel sorry for the LEO coming after him; he's leaving huge shoes to fill.

Unfortunately the RO has to move on to move up in his career. He is going to be sorely missed.

In my ast locale the Town Cop/Chief of Police/Uniformed Barfly (amazing how little trouble happens in the bars when the town cop is always stopping by for a Pepsi...) was also the SRO... even though it was not in the job description any more than "Pepsi and the Bar" was.

But her Pink handcuffs, Pink Glock Grip Sleeve, Pink Badge accents and pet Bull Mastiff(s) helped separate her from the townie ninja-wanabees and made her the favorite of every kid in town...

Congratulations to your little girl :D
As for the RO, the school I went to would have kept a Company of Texas Rangers busy....

Cudos to yer kid, Kid.

I attended parochial schools, where the nuns ruled (literally, doling out punishment with a wood ruler across the back of our hands) in elementary school, and the brother's (Jesuits) in H.S. were as tough as Marine's (physically slapping down trouble-maker's)

They were all very effective, forcibly instilling respect - but, of course, wouldn't be PC these days.

Good going....too many kids don't care about excelling, and too many schools don't foster success. I look forward to your kids doing great things with their lives.... 8)

The best 3 years of my education were the ones I spent in Catholic schools. The nuns were as proficient with yardsticks as samurai warriors with their swords!

Your children are a reflection of yourself, pat yourselves on the back for a job well done!
My last job working for the State was as a Adult Supervisor working at a nearby elementary school. One of my duties was to keep the kids inline, out of trouble while on campus with each other, and outsiders. I really enjoyed the interaction with these youths and won their respect by being both gentle and firm. I was able to reform some of the more troubled youths by spending time listening to them. I started out as "Mr. Ji" and at the end I was "Uncle Ji". Funding ran out for that position and on my last day I was overwhelmed by a mountain of handmade handwritten farewell cards from all the kids. There was a strict policy in school of no physical contact between students and staff but the kids did not care that day giving me farewell hugs at the end of the day. I still have these cards as a reminder of the best job I ever had even though it was just for 6 months. :(

Sounds very rewarding Ji. I'm sure you are proud, as you should be, on the positive impact you have made in so many young lives! :D
