Found A Surprise Pocketknife

Post by Blaine »

It was in an old cigar box with some stuff/news clippings that I brought home from Mom's house. It's a old Western Stainless Camp Knife. The web site for dating them is confusing, but it could have been made anytime between WWII, and 1960. It's appears never to have been sharpened. It's not worth much, maybe 40 bucks, so I think I'll put a good edge on her, and call it Mom 8)
She got into some glue of some sort. I hate to scratch her getting it off, but since I'm going to sharpen it....Pelosi happens....

Old pocket knives are cool. And one that hasn't been sharpened... that just means you get to have the lion's share of its life!

I'm probably a piker as far as numbers, but knives seem to stick to my fingers when I see them....

On the adhesive, you might try some solvents like acetone or something before you scrape on it.

As you know, there are many places in a proper house where you need to have a good, sharp knife at the ready.....I don't think I could walk five paces around here without having a knife (or gun) at the ready. :D :D

Naptha (lighter fluid for zippos) will take off the adhesive with gentle scrubbing with a q- tip. :D

Or ammo to sort thru or a gun magazine to read or load depending on its inclination if'n its made of steel or paper! One thing I have noticed lately, is that all the garage sales I hit, none have jackknives, hatchets or axes anymore.
30/30 Winchester: Not accurate enough fer varmints, barely adequate for small deer; BUT In a 10" to 14" barrelled pistol; is good for moose/elk to 200 yards; ground squirrels to 300 metres

Looks like my old Boy Scout pocket-knife, without the BSA fleur-de-lis.

:)
Government office attracts the power-mad, yet it's people who just want to be left alone to live life on their own terms who are considered dangerous.

History teaches that it's a small window in which people can fight back before it is too dangerous to fight back.

Naphtha is the go to chemical in my guitar shop for removal of sticky adhesives from spots that have been there for decades. It is also top notch for cleaning dust from any surfaces I'm about to glue. Glue hates dust. Sometimes a little patience is required for adhesive that's been on for a long time, and I'll soak it in for a while, and attend to another repair during the soak time. Naphtha is also inexpensive, the only down side to it being it is a carcinogen and highly flammable. I use a great deal of it through the course of a year, indispensable stuff.
It does not work on cyanoacrylate glues, for that I use the nitro methane, works like a charm, but WAY more expensive than naptha.
Cool knife. :D

Try some fingernail polish remover. (Acetone) Just don't get any on the scales as they are probably plastic and will melt.

I've been working on the edge/bevel for a little while. It's very hard stainless. As hard to sharpen as a Buck, or similar hard steel....I love a challange 8)

I sprayed an older jackknife with carb cleaner to remove a lot of gunk, it made the plastic real soft and easily wiped off. Didn't realize it would be plastic. Figured it was too old for that.
