New Old Rossi .357
Been wanting a .357 Rossi for a while. Something to take "woods loafing" and for some hunting and general plinking.
My wife and I shoot a lot of .38's and can load em by the bucketfull pretty cheap.
I've been waiting out my bud on this one and finally got it. Its pretty early, no goofy safeties, nice deep blue and decent finish on the wood. Its a K prefix with a 4xxx serial number. Not sure of the date but probably 78-80.
It has a nice steel Lyman 66 too.
I haven't shot it yet but it seems to feed everything.

It looks pretty nice - and the steel peep is just right on it !
Please consider a range report, after you trot that puppy in front of a target.

Re: New Old Rossi .357
You got a real good one, is it an Interarms import? I bought mine from a friend in 2007, he said he bought it from the original owner and fired it a few times and put it in the safe. When I bought the gun he figured it to be 10 to 15 years old. It has a K serial number, have not been able to date it.
my carbine feeds all my reloads fine so far, .38 and .357 even the 180gr that Tycer sent me a while back. I put a Williams 5D on it. They are a lot of fun and will soon be your #1 gun.

Thanks Griff, I was wondering how old it was. Mine has two zero's before the number though. K004xxx
Yeah I really appreciate that.......I definitely paid too much.
But....if you adjust for inflation and add in the steel Lyman I think I did ok.

Got out to the range with the Rossi. It did ok seein as its got a bead front sight. Once I can play with loads and get a post on the front, it should be a shooter. Sorry for the crappy pics.

Re: New Old Rossi .357
I imagine the fron got changed when the Lyman was put on.
If I didn't spend so much money on high quality targets I'd of changed front sights already.

If that is a 50 yard group you are doing great.
Re: New Old Rossi .357
Yes, the targets posted are fifty yards.
If I had the eyes I did twenty years ago, I'd of shot it at a hundred.

I do the same. Calculated the other day that my .38Sp (158 gr WC over Unique) is a fraction of a cent cheaper that .22lr at gunshow prices.

Re: New Old Rossi .357
My cost went up a little when I switched from 158swc cast to Rainier plated.
I'm good with it though cause I save my lead supply for the stuff that needs it and it makes loading with my RL550 a little easier.
I did the same with .45ACP.

I have one about the same vintage. One of my favorite Fun Guns! I had to send it off to Steve ( Nate) to get it to
feed properly with .357s ( .38 specials were fine).
Have fun!

Re: New Old Rossi .357
OldWin,
If that K serial number has a 0 before the 4 and is seven characters including the K, then yes, it's a mid 80's gun. One of the last made by Rossi with the correct reciever profile. All since the early 90's now have receiver shapes that look like pre-war 94's.
All of the Rossi's up to 2000 had the front sight on the barrel band. The majority had pinned blades. By the 90's though, Rossi dropped the steps of slotting and drilling and just made the sight blade integral with the barrel band .
Do you have a picture of the front sight? It may be one of mine.
I have done hundreds of these over the years

Nate,
The number is K 0048XX. The front sight looks similar to yours but I think my buddy did it when he added the 66. I think it will shoot even better with some smoothing. The trigger is a little gritty and the mainspring is stiff and drags on the strut. A little attention will do wonders.

Re: New Old Rossi .357
Steve, thank you for your good info on the Rossi 92"s. I thought mine was from the 1980's, the man I bought it from in 2007 bought from the original owner. between the two of them it had been fired maybe a dozen times. Reckon that is why I ordered your video and springs, it was sure stiff. It does run good now and I had a 5D sight put on a while back.

Loaded up a plinking load for my Rossi .357. It shows promise for sure. Still gotta run a few through the chrony but this thing is a ball to shoot. Now I'm thinking I need a repro SAA in .357 too.
158gr. Rainier round nose over 6.0gr. Unique.
I figured this was ok seein as I was shooting just 50yrd. but was only leaning against the door of the truck for a rest.

That's very nice....hard to tell it from a Winnie 92 from the pictures. I really like my Navy Arms, Rossi 92 in 45LC I had on here a while back. Smooth as glass and feeds everything.

Re: New Old Rossi .357
Nice looking Rossi.
Re: New Old Rossi .357
Thanks guys. The fact that it looks like an original 92 is what drew me to this little carbine. A buddy had it and I nagged him till he sold it too me.
Out of all my Winchesters, the 92's are my favorite to shoot. I love .38-40 but man, you can chew through a lot of em!
I figured the .357 would be much faster to load in bulk with my RL550. I was shocked how good this thing shoots and it doesn't seem fussy at all.
Now I have to smooth it up and get some lighter springs so looks AND CYCLES like an original 92.

Re: New Old Rossi .357
My .357 Rossi that I bought new a year ago....New springs and smoothed up the action and fired it a couple thousand shots. It is slick and nice with a 1 pound trigger pull. Now I am fixing up a 'real' Winchester 92 and it sure doesn't cycle and fire as well as my Rossi...HEAVY trigger and wants to throw ejected rounds into the next county...I wonder will Stevesgunz springs work on Winchester 92?OldWin wrote: Now I have to smooth it up and get some lighter springs so looks AND CYCLES like an original 92.
Re: New Old Rossi .357
My Rossi is a lot stiffer than my originals.
I don't think the springs will interchange. Winchester 92's use a leaf mainspring. I don't think the others are the same either but I'm not sure on the ejector spring.

Re: New Old Rossi .357
I just did my Puma 92 last week. I called Steve and was surprised to get "the man hisself" on the phone. We discussed my carbine and what had been done to it and what needed to be done. He told me not to order the kit as I only needed the DVD and ejector spring, so it would save me some money. (HUH don't buy my stuff because it will save YOU money) OK. He then said with that model and the problem it was having to do what it said in the video and call him when I had all that done and was ready to work on the loading gate(right like I am going to get him on the phone to help me with a problem a second time). DVD arrived quickly, and it was very informative, spring fit well, all is good. Ok time to call the guy and try try try to get through and get help. Ring Ring third ring Hello this is Steve SHAZAM I got him. Well he walks me through what I need to do for this 1987 Puma model 92. I do as he says put the thing back together and same problem (^(&^(&^ took it all apart one more time and sand the back of the loading gate just a touch more put it back together and......YEHAW Batman that thing works like a champ with the dummies(no not me this time) I made to his length specifications. I bought this gun years ago and have never been able to get through a whole mag without it jamming. Now I sit in the gun room and run ammo(dummies) though it, just to watch it work He He He, . THANK YOU STEVES GUNZ. He was polite, considerate, informed, knew what the HE77 he was talking about, and was able to diagnose a problem from TEXAS to Pennsylvania. Guys I'm just not used to this kind of thing I live near Harrisburg where one of those would be an exception to normal much less all of them. I highly recommend Steve Young.

My DVD will work for the original Win 92s. But as mentioned the hammer springs are different. My ejector spring will help with the hard/high ejecting.
A word of caution. Some of the spring kits that are available for the 92's can create more problems than help.. One of the kits has a long "U" shaped piano wire replacement spring for the stock flat trigger spring. That spring eventually bends to a point that you barely touch the trigger and the hammer drops. I know sometimes it’s cool to have such a light trigger but what happens next is because the trigger nose isn't pulled away from the hammer enough, the 1/4 cock notch will start hitting the trigger nose as it goes by. First you get failures to fire. Next the trigger/hammer won't stay cocked at all. The hammer just follows the bolt. Over the years I have had several sent to me to repair this and with some by the time I get them I have to replace the trigger and sometime the hammer as well.
One of the kits has a really long ejector spring. They do that because if the ejector is poorly fitted the long spring just takes the place of a too stiff spring.
Also, none of the spring kits address the extractor. That's also part of the bump you feel that last 1/4" of closing the bolt. The kits don't address the stiff loading gates either. One of the kits comes with a hammer spring that has a too small outside diameter, too. So small it slips into the spring stop jamming the hammer movement.
Rossi uses heavier than needed springs because they don’t spend a lot of time fitting the parts. So, just changing springs may lead to an unreliable gun. That's why we did the DVD. It shows you how to verify the fit so the lighter spring will work without sacrificing reliability.
Thanks for the kind words. We are a small company so when you call it will probably be me or my wife that answers.fordwannabe wrote:I just did my Puma 92 last week. Great info Nate! Thank you very much.
I am definitely going to get your stuff for mine. A quick google search reveals you are the most trusted source for Rossi 92 service.
Mine is an older version. The loading gate isn't stiff on mine. I think my biggest issue is the ejector. That sucker throws brass like an AK!

Ah... let think for a sec... NO. It now belongs to my wife, it was her cowboy action gun. I bought it in '86 and slicked it up running emery cloth over all the rough spots... until the insides shined like mirrors, shortened the ejector spring and reassembled it. It runs like butter in 100º heat! I used it until I bought my first '73 in late '86.BlaineG wrote:Wanna make a quick fifty buck profit?Griff wrote:Mid '80s.
