Late 3rd. Model 1876 Winchester

Post by Dusty Texian »

The Model of 1876 Winchester has been one of my favorite firearms to collect , load and shoot hunt with and just have around to admire, from time to time. One of my favorite 76 rifles happens to be a very late 3rd. model 28" oct. barrel full mag. plain trigger 45/75 wcf cal. For many yrs now this one has been my Go To gun for hunting. Sure I have used the others 45/60 40/60 50/95 and they are all fine cartridges, its just that the 45/75 wcf 350gr. happens to turn my crank. The load I use for hunting is very close to what Winchester offered for the old caliber back in days of old. The load , Bullet cast from soft lead from the original Winchester mold drop at 350+ gr. and run around .458+ . Lube is my old stand by, Bees Wax/Tallow 50/50 , CCI #200 cap, case is formed from 50/90 Sharps ,and a heavy charge of 2FF Swiss Bp. all seated in the Original 45/75wcf Winchester tong tool. That load shoots too point of aim for me and the 76 sights , and has proven to be Big Medicine on deer and wild hog and every other creature that has had a doce of it . A pic. of my old hunting partner! ,,,,,,,DT Image

Dusty another good looking old gal. Do you know if a Lyman tang sight for an 1886 would fit the 1876? I know my shooting would be better with a tang sight than just the plain open sights. Nice shooting.

hondo 1892 ,Not sure about that. On one of my 1876 40/60wcf rifles that get's hunted almost as much as this one I use a Lyman tang sight coded for the Model 1894 Winchester . Its such a small and compact sight in comparison to the Winchester Mid Range tang sight. The Lyman stem height and angle fits the old 76 great and sure helps me focus on the barrel sights.,,,,,,DT

Dusty is your Lyman sight a "D" or "DA"? If you look at gunpoker right now there is a nice '76 carbine for sale in 45-75. You should have one to go with all them rifles you have.

Thanks for sharing Dusty. I am most pleased that you choose to shoot these old girls. They deserve being allowed out of the house and to be hunted with. You're doing good.

Thanks for all of the replies , Mr. M. M. Wright I agree Sir, the old rifles are made for just that! hondo 1892 , the Lyman sight on my 40/60wcf rifle is the modern version of the DA . Works perfect ! As for that carbine ,You know I'm Trying to Quit!!!! ,,,DT
