How much tax?

Post by Rusty »

We just had limited bear hunt here in Florida to reduce the population of black bears that have gone unchecked for the last 20 years. All the anti hunters are up in arms. It got me to wondering how much in taxes we pay as outdoors men. Does anyone know the what the excise tax is on our products?

I know this is all done under the Pittman-Robertson act and the money is supposed to be put back into wildlife management and research. What gets me is that the anti hunters stand on the sidelines and scream and cry but never spend any money to help promote protection.

When bears aren't hunted, they stop fearing people. When bears stop fearing people, they start eating people. When they start eating people, some anti-hunters demand that something be done (other than hunting) and others point out that the bears were there first. When there are too many bears, and too many people become bear chow, then they have to be hunted. When they are hunted, the anti-hunters scream louder and people send money to anti-hunting non profits, who make quite a bit of profit. When anti-hunting groups make quite a bit of profit, they use a little of that profit to make more noise about the hunting, because it brings them more profit. When they make enough noise about the hunting, bears aren't hunted. When bears aren't hunted, they stop fearing people.

Meanwhile, the hunters fund the scientific and ethical management of bear populations.

Thank you Paul. I was thinking that fishing gear was taxed as well to go into the same fund. I guess I was mistaken about that.

I work with a young lady that I have known for quite a few year. I really wanted some facts before I mentioned this to her. I don't want to be cruel or rude but would like to have facts. I think a lot of people are misinformed and tend to think with emotion.

Some more facts are in this article from 2014 . Like 1,300 bears killed by cars since 2007 , 284 in 2012 alone .

Yep, the "Teddy Bear" syndrome, closely related to the "Bambi" syndrome...
