Anybody use 700X?

Post by Rusty »

I would normally use Unique but have seen any in quite a while. My LGS is pretty well stocked with 700X. I've never used it but I checked the loading manuals and it looks like it will pretty much do what I need. I'm looking to load some cast bullets for my .30-06.

700X is pretty fast for cast in the '06 unless you're looking for gallery loads. I've used 6.5gr of 700X with Ed Harris' 160gr. bullet, gave 1150-1200fps and 2.75" at 100 yards according to my notes. I didn't record my sight dope though.

PS
I really like it for handgun loads so it is always around.

Yes sir, that's all I'm looking for. 12-1500 FPS with cast bullets.

Which bullet(s) are you planning on using? Just curious, I haven't spent much time messing around with this class of load in full sized cartridges (by that I mean '06, 8x57, 303, etc).

I have burned Lots of 700X but not in any rifle loads. I used to buy 12# kegs for shotgun and have used it in many handgun loads. If you have printed data for it ,it should be great. I have used Red Dot, another fast powder, in cast bullet rifle loads with success.

I use 700x for low velocity handgun and (pistol caliber) rifle loads.
I know a whole lot about very little and nothing about a whole lot.

Thanks Centershot. I've read over that several times as it's a sticky on castboolits. I'm thinking I'll take the plunge. It's just a new powder I've never worked with before. According t the Lyman cast Bullet Manual I can also use it in .223,.308, .38 Sp, and 9mm. At least they have data for it. I'm not sure what the results will be.

Used 700X in 12 gauge skeet loads 25 years ago . I found it to be rather DIRTY and didn't care for it . Well atleast in an 1100 or 11/87 .

I've been using it for a couple of years now as a substitute for Unique in pistol rounds. Works ok for me.

Everything I used to use 700X for, I've replaced with RedDot. Just picked up an 8lb keg of RedDot.

Two or 3 years ago when shelves were bare for lack of powder and primers I ran across 12 pound keg of 800x. I had used 700x in 12 ga loads. The 800x was under $65 for the keg, I now am inventing uses for that stuff

That's kind of where I am. thinking it might not be my first choice but it's available.

Yes, if you have a nice pile of any shotgun powder I believe you are going to be able to use it nicely in low to moderate velocity pistol loads and for light cast bullet loads. You may have to do a little "pioneering" in some cases. That's why we enjoy owning Ruger revolvers and Rossi levers -- a pleasant safety factor when "pioneering". That's how we ended up with that "universal load" of Red Dot powder: a smart reloader had a gob of it sitting around and wanted more uses for it.

I used it in 12 gauge for years. I would buy a 12lb caddie every six months. It's a great powder. It is dirty yes. I've got 2 700X empty powder cans that are full of dead or used primers. I don't no how many r in there. But one day I might sit down and count them. I stopped shooting skeet 15 years ago and have about 10 pounds left. I saw some loads for the 45ACP. So I'll try it out and get back to u.

There are better powders for 30-06 lead loads. I have use SR4759. A5744, & RL7 with great success. SR4759 being the preference.
