Hyphenated cartridges of the old west

Post by J Miller »

I have a request from my brother for a list of hyphenated cartridges of the past.

So I figured I'd ask here as my COTW is AWOL since the move.

How about we do it this way:

Winchester 1873:
32 W.C.F. ~ 32-20
38 W.C.F. ~ 38-40
44 W.C.F. ~ 44-40

Winchester 1876:
45-60
45-75
50-90

Winchester 1886:
45-70
45-90
50-110

Winchester 1892:
32 W.C.F. ~ 32-20
38 W.C.F. ~ 38-40
44 W.C.F. ~ 44-40

Winchester 1894:
30 W.C. F. ~ 30-30
32-40
38-55

Winchester 1895
?

Winchester single shots
?

As for the Marlins and others I really do not know enough to quote anything.

So can you guys fill in the blanks for me so I can make my brother happy?

Joe, your Winchester book should have tons of info.

The 76 was 50-95. It also had a 40 cal round 40-60 or 65.

86 had 38-56, 40-65, 40-82, 50-100-450, and a couple others I'm forgetting. 40-72 maybe?

92, 25-20

94, 25-35

95, 40-72, another 40-something, 30 govt-03, 30 govt-06, 30-40 (aka 30 US and 30 Army)

While there were other cartridges chambered, AFAIK, those are all the hyphenated designations.

Think 40-70(72?) may have been an 86 load also.

Forgot about the 38-70

AFAIK, the .40-72WCF/.40-72 was introduced in the Winchester Model 1895.

I believe that the '85 Hi Wall was made in every cartridge that was available till after the turn of the century.

Add this to your list: '85 in 40-70 Ballard. I have one with a #4 barrel and a single set trigger.

The Marlin 1888 was never offered in .25-20 anything. The 1889 was offered in .25-20 Marlin (25 guns sold) and the early 1894 was also .25-20 Marlin, and eventually dropped for the .25-20 WCF.

Malamute,

My Winchester book is in the same area as my COTW, AWOL. There's a lot of things I may never find again after that move.

As for the hyphenated cartridges all I can say is: WOW! I knew there was a bunch of them, but until now I'd never seen them all listed in the same place.

Thanks guys I do appreciate it. I'll send this to my brother and watch him send me more questions.

I have a nice old octagon barreled 1895 Winchester chambered in .38-72 WCF. Nobody mentioned that caliber.

IIRC the book "Cartridges of the World" has a whole section on obsolete old cartridges like this. Be nice and buy him a copy for his birthday or whatever. :D

Don't forget Teddy's "big medicine" in the 1895!

Also, the Russian government purchased a bunch of 1895's in 7.62x54R...

Great list Joe! :D
