NCIS - Gibbs knife
I've become a fan of NCIS and have developed a big want for a knife like Gibbs carries.
Can someone here tell me what brand and model this probably is?
TIA

Not an NCIS fan.
Appears to be a Zero Tolerance folder. Excellent quality, they're not cheap.

Its a nice knife.
Keep in mind its a liner lock. They fold on your hand now and then if stressed. I assume all liner locks are no locks when using them. Have one friend that had an expensive liner lock close on him.

That don't sound too good. I have a Shrade and my wife has a Kershaw folder and they lock solid when open.
How does a liner lock knife work? I wouldn't want to loose any fingers cos of it folding up at the wrong time.

Re: NCIS - Gibbs knife
His knife is way too pretty to be used everyday. And, really too big. Looks good on TV but I prefer something a bit smaller. They're easier to carry and use.

Cheap liner locks can be, but most of mine are Emersons.Malamute wrote:Its a nice knife.

Something I do after checking the lock engagement, I open and hold very tightly the body and give the back of the blade a rather hard smack with a calibrated stick I use for such purposes. After a few of those and no lock failures, I call it good enough. I do this over something soft as many a times I'll smack the knife out of my hands.
Benchmade Axis locks changed the game too. I'm testing the Cold Steel Tri-ad locks now. - Brian
Re: NCIS - Gibbs knife
While not a fan of liner locks, in a quality blade, they do work well.
Frame locks are similar but harder to accidentally release.
I use a Benchmade Triage (Axis lock) for duty use because it's strong and effectively impossible to accidentally release. The Griptilian popularized the Axis, I've got 3 or 4 Benchmades using it (the 510, mini Griptilian, Triage, etc).

Re: NCIS - Gibbs knife
You may have missed where I mentioned it was an expensive knife. I didn't recall the details, he told me about it around 15 years ago or so. I just texted him, he said it was an $800 custom, but didn't recall the make. He also said it was a left handed one he was using right handed, which he said wasn't a good idea. I don't know why, just what he said.BrianSH wrote:Cheap liner locks can be, but most of mine are Emersons.Malamute wrote:Its a nice knife.

I googled the axis lock. Looks like a good idea, though Ive never handled one. Still, a folding knife is reliant on the mechanism functioning properly to remain completely safe. I try to always keep in mind that any folder can potentially fold in use if used hard enough with force on the lock mechanism. I'm much more trusting of a lockback folder in any event.
For Joe, a liner lock has a part of the inner liner that is a spring that pops under the bottom edge of the blade shank when opened, and is pushed sideways to unlock and close it. They are handy for one handed opening and closing, and I use them as such, just am very wary of exactly how I use them.

Re: NCIS - Gibbs knife
Malamute,
Thanks for the video link. It amazes me how much stuff is out there that I can't find.
The Kershaw I bought my wife for her birthday is like the one in the video. It's never given us any trouble. And it's been used a lot.
Now that I know what a liner lock is, I'm not worried about it.
Thanks again, Joe
