Savage model 42?
Anyone here have any experience of the Savage 42 combination gun?
It sure is ugly compared to my Savage 24 that I very stupidly let go
I'm interested to know if it is actually something that with put meat on the table or just a gimmicky toy.
I doubt very much that I will buy one, as they cost $969.00 in the UK

.
FWIW, GK - I passed on a Savage 42 in favor of a $300USD (+/-, new) Chiappa Double badger, I ordered last Fall.
It folds into a compact AR case I bought ($30)
While the DB is available in .22LR, I opted for a .22mag over the 3" .410
Chiappa has since introduced a 20ga version ( Spring 2016): http://www.thefirearmblog.com/blog/2015 ... le-badger/
My DB handles & shoots about the same as any of the Savage Model 24's I've had over the years, but with the nice (IMO) addition of issue fibre-optic sights.

Re: Savage model 42?
Thanks Pete, the Double Badger does look like a better designed gun, in fact I have a O/U .410 that is very similar, even has a full under lever like a Savage 99.
I was interested in what you said about the fiber optic sights, the only problem I had with the Savage 24 was that the open sights were hard to see in anything other than bright sunlight
I guess I'm just curious about the model 42, plastic, aluminum, no choke and costing so much.

GK,
While I have no idea what the gun market is like on your side of the pond I wouldn't even consider the 42 for almost a grand. They sell for around $450 here and I think that is too much for what they are. I've handled 3 of them now and shot one. They just feel cheap. The one I got to shoot did shoot fine, made one ragged .50" hole at 25 yards (with the .22 barrel) off of the bench but it wasn't something I would ever want to tote around with me.
Eric

Re: Savage model 42?
Thanks Eric, kinda like what I was expecting, $450 seems too high for what it is, $969 is unbelievable..

Re: Savage model 42?
The Savage 42 would be a great tool to have for around $150-$225. The problem is they're asking more than twice that over here. I handled one at the 2013 Shot Show and was so disappointed in how crappy it was (for what they're asking). I'm really surprised they haven't vanished yet.
Slow is just slow.

Re: Savage model 42?
My Springfield m6 scout fills my slot for a 22/410 combo.Great little gun I like taking it out for rabbits from time to time , just a fun little gun to play with.
Re: Savage model 42?
A coworker has one for it's intended role (pest gun) as he lives on about 100 acres and doesn't always need an AR, 870 etc for taking out skunks or whatever.
Compared to the Model 24,yes "it feels cheap" being mostly plastic, and it's overpriced. The trigger was better than on an M6, and not being a foldup survival piece like the M6, it actually handled ok.
I personally skipped it, and went the .22 rifle/actual shotgun route and just pick which I need. I definitely wouldn't pay a grand for one.

Re: Savage model 42?
Thanks for the replies, this "type" of gun interests me but as all your observations suggest, the Savage is not worth what it sells for in the US.
Unfortunately in the UK anything from America costs a lot more over here. The asking price in the UK of $969.00 is ridiculous.
I have three .410s and two .22s so unless I find a double badger or a model 24 at the right price I'll certainly pass on the Savage 42.
Thanks again for your input...

Re: Savage model 42?
I have a Double badger in 22/20gauge. It doesn't kick very much at all. 3/4 ounce Slugs at 1650fps have a little kick but nothing that bothered me. I am also picking up a Savage 24C Camper in 22/20, cant wait to see how it compares to the Badger.
30/30 Winchester: Not accurate enough fer varmints, barely adequate for small deer; BUT In a 10" to 14" barrelled pistol; is good for moose/elk to 200 yards; ground squirrels to 300 metres
250 Savage... its what the 223 wishes it could be...!
