Jason....cool! I've only seen a few of those Russian 95's and as expected, were beaters. Does yours have the acceptance marks on the receiver and the barrel?---6

It can - The fella from Rock Island (in the video above), describes how Russia wanted to get rid of the thousands of "emergency" ordered rifles (from wherever they could get them, just before WWI) - and since they were supporting the communist side in the Spanish Civil War, many of the rifles (including Winchester 1895's) were sent there, where they were proofmark and reworked in a Spanish Arsenal.2ndovc wrote:Sure does. I've wondered why they don't chamber any new 95s in 7.62x54r with all that surplus ammo out there.

That part I know, but how did it get back here in one piece?
Not all of them were reworked either. Not sure where the phrase " emergency rifles" comes from. The Russians were buying hundreds of thousands of rifles from Winchester, Remington, Westinghouse and pistols from Colt and S&W long before the revolution.

Mr. Jason,
Your Russian - Spanish Winchester is an exceptional rifle. I doubt that I will ever see a better example.
Congratulations. That is a keeper.

You very funny man!
I'm going to try and get some better photos of the markings today.
The real sad thing here is that I used to have two of them. Sold one while I was building my house.
It paid for all the windows and the front door but I really wish I hadn't done that!

The phrasing is mine (why the quotes), paraphrasing the situation Russia was faced with: They had more soldiers (a million ?) than they had rifles, and so were buying whatever they could get their paws on for WWI.
Evidently, besides buying from the (neutral at the time) US companies, Russia was also buying rifles from multiple other countries that weren't involved in the war.
They were desperate, which drove my phrasing.
As an aside, I was VERY impressed by the WWII-era movie Enemy at the Gates, about using the 7.62x54R rifle effectively.

Who needs "windows" anyway....2ndovc wrote:The real sad thing here is that I used to have two of them. Sold one while I was building my house.

Maybe a door, but 'windows' versus 'a cool gun' - - - I'm going for the cool gun....

If I had the Rubles, I would be doing my best to buy my way into a Siberian reindeer hunt with the caveat that I did it with a Russian Arsenal 1895 - that would come home with me in lieu of reindeer antlers.
Would certainly cost me more than an RIA auction piece, but ... wow.
