Yep I did, and have seen the Marlin Guide Guns for sale at our local Walmart. I have owned the Marlin Guide Gun before, and have reloaded the 45-70 cartridge from black powder to smokeless
but I really love that 26" barreled Marlin 1895 Cowboy model more than the, but could probably fill the itch with the 1895 Classic model with it's 22" barrel if Walmart had them. :D I went into a local gun store yesterday with a name of Frontier Guns, and not a single Levergun in the place. I then went down to a store Snappy's Sport Senter where I know the owner, who took over from his dad who opened the place in 1947, and they got Henry's, Marlins and Winchesters.

You guys can have every 45-70 out there. I sold my Cowboy after an 80 shot silhouette match. I came to the realization that it was a hunting round and not a plinking round.

My LGS had a near perfect Cowboy on the rack, for over 2 months. Priced at $650. I was even tempted at that price.

 Whaaat? Don't tell me I have to sell my (8) .45-70s.... :(

The only one that gets to me is shooting hot loads out of my 1886 Browning SRC.
But to be honest, I haven't shot my TC Encore 24" bbl much. As light as it is I imagine it would get tiresome quick. But I wouldn't use the TC for plinking.

This is the one I used to have. I had it set up for a 1000 yard white buffalo shoot (that I never got to go to  )

the other two are also 1895's -- a savage 1895 303 and a Winchester 1895 in 405 wcf...they are both good shooters as well.

The beauty of the 45-70 is that you can load it from an "all day plinker" to a "grizzly charge stopping monster".

I had four of the old square bolt 1895's before a 33 WIN , 38-56 , 40-65 and a 40-82 but never the 45-70 or 45-90 !

I might add the 1895 in 40-65 I had came from a fellow in Fairbanks AK !

I had a pair of them !

The first one I got was made in 1978 and was Micro Groove . Used a Ranch Dog 460-350GC pushed with XMP5744 to do this deer in with a single 55 yard shot .

The second was a 1972 first year production with the Ballard rifling , bought on Proxi Bid from an auction in Kansas I believe it was . When the gun arrived it came with the original box and factory paper work . That stuff was not mentioned in the auction .

I have had a couple more. just sold a friend one in 45/70 with tapered oct barrel, mint bore, half mag etc. he is delighted. they are pretty uncommon guns.

I got the 38-56 I had from Leroy Merz at the time he also had a super duper 1895 TD in 45-90 that was engraved !

I put that engraved 45-90 on the same platform with a Parker GH 8 gauge

With the potential for post election riots, it might be handy to have a rifle that shoots through stuff. Lots of stuff.

Wish I'd had my camera at the collector show last weekend! A friend handed me a gun case and it was pretty heavy! When I opened it, inside was a 1895 Marlin deluxe! Pistol grip, high grade English walnut, high grade checkering, piano finish, takedown, engraved, 4 leaf express rear sight, steel checkered Ballard shotgun buttplate. Condition was 100% in every way, with not even the slightest ding! Good thing I was sitting when he handed it to me, or I might have collapsed! It made me weak in the knees just looking at such a rare and fine gun!
My friend is an extremely fine gunsmith, and finally told me he had owned the gun for almost 15 years, and just finished restoring it to the condition it is now. A perfect restoration, and expertly done to original standards!

This thread is giving me the inclination to want another square bolt 1895 ! And I do not care if it's 38-56 , 40-65 , 40-82 , 45-70 or 45-90 .

The local shop has an unfired C Sharps rifle in 45-70. It has lots of custom features and upgrades (DST, case colored receiver, long range tang sight, upgraded wood, etc). I went on line to "build" it. It came to about $4k. They have it up on the wall at $2k.
I know a whole lot about very little and nothing about a whole lot.

I would never want to be without at least one 45-70. I have to admit, I don't use them for plinking, but I've taken three nice Whitetails with various 45-70's. At present, I have an original Winchester 1886 made in 1890 and a Browning SRC. I've got two types of rounds loaded up. The first has a 400 grain cast bullet loaded to about 1,320 fps for hunting, and the second has a 500 grain bullet loaded to 1,300 for taking out engine blocks of pursuing vehicles, or any other application where the Hammer of Thor is required. Here are photos of my two 45-70's.

I put 40 rounds through a 1886 in 45-70 today. Made in 1892 it has a cresent buttplate and my shoulder has a hint of blue showing.

Here's my Pair...I call them "Old and New".
A 45/70 Guide Gun, and an original 1873 Springfield Trapdoor.
I load across the board, from straight blackpowder/cast for the Springfield to "Heavy Hitter" jacketed loads, as well as moderate cast rounds, for the Guide Gun. I love the variety this fine old cartridge offers.
