32-20. Neck tension vs crimp re: ignition?

Post by Tycer »

How much does neck tension affect ignition of powder in a cartridge with a good collet crimp in the 32-20 with Lil'Gun powder?
I found out the brass is sizing down my bullets a tad. I loaded 50 without sizing to see if accuracy is affected. The bullets do not slip easily into the case, but without crimping can be moved with force by hand. I'm using a lee collet die for crimp. They stay put with that die crimping in the middle of the thin front band on the 311008. They chamber easily.
Kind regards,
Tycer

Have you checked out the RCBS 32-115FNgc? Pretty much the same thing plus gas check and crimp groove. HTH

Most .32-20 brass has quite thin necks. I would not expect it to apply a lot of neck tension on the bullet. I roll crimp the 311008 just over the front edge of the front driving band with the bullet sized .314. This way shoots great in my .32-20's and .327 federal magnums with IMR 4227. 2400 and Red Dot. I have not tried H110. Shooting The largest dia. Cast bullet that will chamber should give enough
resistance to get a good burn with H110.

I have no experience with the 32-20, but in general I have found that neck tension with slow powders like LilGun, H110, that neck tension is more important for consistent ignition than crimp is.
