OT but still a Winchester/ WWII combo

Post by 2ndovc »

A recent carbine post got me thinking about mine. Haven't had them out in a while.

It's an early Winchester with the seperate spring tube assembly and blued barrel, though also has post WWII parts. Most likely a DCM gun from the 50's or 60's. A super shooter that has accounted for a bunch of woodchucks and other varmints. I bought it and the scabbard while I was in college about a million years ago. The Ithaca 1911A1 I bought about a year later.

That's a sweet pair. A bit redundant since both arms were issued to fulfill the same role, but cool none the less. Especially the scabbard.

The carbine was supposed to replace the sidearm but never really did. There's many many photos out of WWII soldiers packing both a carbine and a .45.

I wish there was a good story behind the scabbard but there isn't. I bought it at a flea market for $75.00 many years ago. I have one for my M1 and my Krag too. I made a rule that any time I saw one under $100 I had to buy it. Glad i did.

used to hang it on my dirt bike riding around the little farm I had.

Excellent photo of a beautifully matched pair. Man, there's something about the GI model 1911 that just says "business." Nice irons. - DixieBoy

P.S. One of my former students is a military collector. I fired a bunch of great old rifles he owned, but the most fun was his amazingly accurate Winchester manufacture M - 1 Carbine. What a sweetie.

My Dad (101st Airborne, WWII/Bastogne) would recognize those two fine pieces. I have his Markmanship medals in both rifle (Garand) and carbine (M1) that he earned at Ft. Benning.

Thanks Guys!

I've been having fun taking photos of all this stuff.

I'll have to get the M1 and 1917 next.

The M1917 rifle or pistol? If rifle, skip it and get a 1903 or 1903A3. They actually got some use in combat in WWII.

Found this neat picture yesterday. It's from July or August '44 in Normandy. It's a rare photo for two reasons. #1 The 2nd Arm Div. troops are wearing US Army camo HBTs (they were the only unit in the ETO to use them, and only wore them for a couple months), and #2 it looks like two guys are carrying 1903s. The guy second from the right likes like he might have a Remington 1903. The guy behind him with the butt of his rifle on the ground looks like he might be carrying a 1903A3 (straight stock, peep sight).

That is by far the coolest combo I've seen here. I really like that scabbard a lot.
