How about this one, I thought that it would make a good go to round in a H&R 500 S&W, in case a elephant went bonkers the next time the circus came to town.

THE NEW BIGGEST AND BADDEST !!!

20 rnd. box = $45.00 50 rnd. box = $90.00 Muzzle velocity = 1200 fps Muzzle energy = 2240 ft. lbs Recoil = 64 ft. lbs.

The 700 gr. Hardcast is now part of our permanent line-up, and the response has been TREMENDOUS! This will handle any Tyrannosaurus in your back yard. This is the LARGEST COMMERCIAL LOAD AVAILABLE, and the only place you can get it is right here. Our standard loading for best accuracy and all-around knockdown power is 1200 fps with 2240 ft. lbs. of energy and a Taylor KO Factor of 60. The Taylor Factor places this between a 375 H&H Magnum and a 458 Win Mag. Richard Gibson from Homer, AK has designed and manufactures this bullet and is one of the best hand casters around. If you plan on shooting more than one or two of these in one session, we recommend wearing a padded shooting glove. If you are into maximum recoil and self-abuse, this is the round for you. The bottom line is - You've bought the Biggest and the Baddest Revolver out there and this will demonstrate it's MAXIMUM CAPABILITY!! These are also available in the Sample Pak (10 rnds. maximum) or in a 20 round box.

The bullet with the long boreriding nose is nothing more than the old Lyman 560gr borerider. I get them from a caster up in Cody, Mt Baldy Bullets. The old Lyman manuals have load info. Since your Sharps will shoot those long nosed Postell bullets, I don't see why it wouldn't digest the Lyman.

That is a 45/70 right? What was that talk about a pistol ?

Wouldnt a lot of guns have problems stabilizing such
a long bullet ? No doubt being shot at close range whether
it keyholed or not might not make much of an accuracy difference.
Hitting your prey sideways might result in some incredible damage
in it's own unique way.

The original 45-70 bullet was a 500gr RN. It was good up to 2 miles.

Yes, the 700g bullet is in a S&W 500 mag case. Handguns have a fast twist rate to spin up the bullet, and that one should spin just fine in the longer barrels of the 500s.

I think you can get that bullet in a 459 dia., and I think the faster twist barrels will stabilize it. But, yeah, a lot of guns with slower twist barrels will have trouble stabilizing it...

It's a good question. I've been thinking that at the velocities I shoot heavies I don't really need the gas check.

I think it's needed more if the bullets are sized to the actual bore diameter, because they won't bump up. That's why one + thousandths over bore size is recommended for the hard cast bullets.

So, yeah, I think a plain base bullet, sized .460 for my guns, won't lead the bore. I think the gas checks may be a fad in some cases, like adjustable rear sights on a handgun...
