Rem UMC 38+P 125 SJHP ..surprising from a lever action.

Post by mickbr »

A friend today decided to run some of these through his Rossi 1892 20" barrel. The box says about 945fps from a pistol and youtube tests bear this out. Through the lever.... a bit more pop and blast then he expected and they blasted a jug setup pretty good. So he ran them through the chrony, 1300fps average. I was fairly suprised at the 350fps jump for a 38 powder load, expected the velocity to be more like 1150fps or so from the lever action. Pulled the bullet off and weighed the charge which was 6.5 grains.

Sealed breech, all the powder is burned where it should be, I found the same with 41s out of my Henry, 210s going 1800 is nothing to sneeze at !

That's about right. All the loads I chrono from my 4" model 66 to my 20" Rossi make just about that same difference.
I shot some Winchester white box 125gr 38+P through my Rossi one time. They shot really well too.

You do get more of an increase than you might expect in a .38/.357 levergun.

No, it ain't!

I'm surprised at the velocity gain in a rifle for the 38 Special load. Plenty for social work or varmints.

210 grain .41 diameter at 1800 would take down anything I have hunted for a long time.
